T 1 THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 19361 j POSTAGE DUE, Chestnut Colt, by Postage High Time; Property j of A. G. Vanderbilt, Made an Impressive Debut at Havre de j j Grace, Md., April 15, Winning a Graded Handicap at Six Fur- j j longs in 1:1215. He Appears Ready for a Longer Trial. See j J Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performances. j j By NORRIS HOYDEN. j A Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt has said that his large stable may be weak in the three-year-old division this season. While the young sportsman showed a number of likely youngsters last year, none gave much promise of great development. The best of the Vanderbilt colts was Postage Due, which proved a liberal contributor in giving the stable money-earning honors in 1935, and he very easily can be the best of his age in that establishment this year. Postage Due is not expected to be much of a stayer, because he is by High Time and in his brilliant stud career that triple-Domino stallion has sired only one first-class stayer Sarazen. But the ability of Sarazen to run so far and fast was attributed not to anything in his breeding but to his faultless action. Although a precocious and free-running colt, Postage Due demonstrated on several occasions that he could run from behind and it is entirely possible he may be another exception to the High Time rule. He is stoutly enough bred on the distaff side, being from a daughter of Fair Play, whose next dam was by Star Shoot and the third dam a half-sister to Colin and to the dam of Wildair. He won at the first asking at Havre de Grace last spring, but had no chance in the Aberdeen Stakes. After triumphing again in an allowance event at Pimlico, Postage Due was second, beaten three-fourths of a length by Grand Slam in the Pimlico Nursery Stakes. Then at Belmont Park he scored in an overnight dash and came back to hold Maeriel to a neck decision in the Juvenile Stakes in a driving finish. White Cockade and Coldstream were lapped on the Vanderbilt colt at the finish of the five furlongs straightaway, the time for which was :58. Going to Rockingham Park, Postage Due was beaten a length by his stablemate, Winter Sport, in the Juvenile Handicap, in which his impost, was 124 pounds, much more than carried by the other starters which included Seabiscuit and Bright and Early. Returning to Aqueduct, the Vanderbilt colt gave further evidence of his speed in coming from behind Snarks pace to beat him by a length and a half at five furlongs. Galsac and Maxine F. were also behind them at the end. Traveling again, Postage Due went to Detroit for the Woodward Stakes, but he was unable to live up to expectations, as his stablemate, Speed, finished second to Valevictorian. The next appearance in competition of the Vanderbilt colt was in the Flash Stakes at Saratoga and he was a tiring fourth back of Red Rain, Delphinium and Galsac after setting the pace to the stretch. Waiting tactics were used with him in the United States Hotel Stakes and the High Time colt responded by running down the pacemaker in the stretch to score by two lengths over Galsac with Parade Girl third and Red Rain fourth. He was not so fortunate in the Saratoga Special and tired in the final furlong after having been, in the thick of the battle. After displaying disappointing efforts in the Sanford Stakes and Grand Union Hotel Stakes, Postage Due was given a brief rest before starting in the Eastern Shore Handicap at Havre de Grace, in which he shouldered a burden of 117 pounds to come from the pace to defeat Wise Duke by half a length with Maeriel third, Seabiscuit fourth and other good youngsters in the field. His final start was in the Remsen Handicap at Jamaica, in which he carried 124 pounds and gained steadily on the leaders in the stretch to be third, two lengths back of The Fighter with Teufel separating them.
