BOLD VENTURE CANTERS Qualifies for Woodward Memorial by Impressive Jamaica Victory. Schwartz Colorbearer Under Restraint Throughout Running of South Shore Purse. JAMAICA, N. Y., April 16. Morton Schwartz Bold Venture qualified for his en-" gagement in the Wood Memorial and showed some degree of Kentucky Derby quality at Jamaica this afternoon when he was a galloping winner of the South Shore Purse, one mile and seventy yards affair confined to the three-year-olds. The son of St. Germans and Possible, simply cantered home winner before the Greentree Stables Galsac, with Neap, from the Brookmeade Stable, finishing third, while the Wheatley Stables In-vermark, the only other starter, was last of the four which performed. There was nothing remarkable in the field which was beaten by Bold Venture, but the character of his race was impressive when little Ira Hanford had him under restraint throughout as he romped along in front from flag fall to finish. For the second day of the New York season another big crowd turned out and, although the fields were small, the sport was of first class calibre. One of the races was so excitingly close that the camera had to be called on to decide that Kawagoe had won from Stickemup. In the South Shore Purse there was little time lost at the post, and as the four left, Invermark was first to show the way. Bold Venture had jumped in the air as he left, but he came down fast and was showing the way before the turn was reached. There he lugged in somewhat, and as a result both Galsac and Neap met with some interference, though it was more of a threat than anything else. BY SAFE MARGIN. As the back stretch was reached Bold Venture was two lengths clear and galloping strongly under restraint. Galsac was in second place and well before Invermark, with Neap in the rear and rather a distant last. Through the back stretch Hanford still had a good hold of Bold Venture as he increased his lead to three lengths, while Coucci was hustling Galsac along in a vain effort to run him down. Invermark had dropped out of the contention and Neap was in third place. Never being released from restraint, the Schwartz colt continued to draw away to add another length to his advantage, and before the stretch was reached Coucci was driving Galsac vigorously in his effort to cut down the lead. It was of no avail. Bold Venture still had four lengths to spare as he crossed the line. Neap, under a long drive, was third, a length and a half back of Galsac and eight lengths before Invermark. After the finish Invermark ran off an additional half mile with Litzenberger. The first C. V. Whitney score of the new season came in the opening race when Hurdle, a gelded son of Hustle On and Pomp-tine, that had some education in Florida, beat a field of juvenile platers. It was a five furlongs dash, and at the end the winner was doing his best to lead home Mrs. Runyons Tap On, with the Wheatley Stables Grand Jester a distant third before Light Moment. AWAY TO GOOD START. From a good start Grand Jester took command and was followed by Hurtle and Tap On, and they were destined to dominate the race going to the turn out of the back stretch. Nertney moved up on Grand Jester with Hurtle and soon put him away to open up a lead of a length. At the same time Tap On moved up on the outside and was soon alongside the Wheatley colt, and then past to give chase to Hurtle. Nertney had taken a slight hold on Hurtle as he turned into the stretch, but as Tap On continued to finish resolutely he had to rouse the son of Hustle On, and he was well flattened out at the end to be winner by a neck. During the running the saddle on Victor Emanuels Road Knight turned and Litzenberger had to ease him up at the end. .Continued on twentv-sccond vaae.. BOLD VENTURE CANTERS Continued from first page. First use of the camera at the finish was made in the second race when two horses swept past the line closely lapped. The developed photograph gave the decision to Mrs. Ethel Jacobs Kawagoe, with John Mundingers Stickemup second and the Sage Stables Armstrong third over Sheknows, the favorite of the field. From a good start Dreamy Isle was first to show the way, and she was closely attended by Sheknows and Kawagoe. Pom-peius, after beginning in the first flight, was soon pinched back and shuffled about until his every chance had gone. Sheknows finally put Dreamy Isle away and at the same time Kawagoe drew a bit closer, while Armstrong came into the running on the stretch turn. Through the final furlong there was some closing up back of the leaders and right at the end Kawagoe and Stickemup drew away from the others to stage their duel. Stickemup, on the inside, appeared to have earned the decision, but Kawagoe was racing strongly and there was no reason for complaint when it was his nose that showed first at the line, according to the photograph. Two lengths back of the battling pair, Armstrong had Sheknows beaten by a neck for third, the filly having tired right at. the end. Five three-year-old fillies made up the field in the Rose Twig Purse, the third offering and it proved easy for "Mr." Nightingales Little Miracle, a daughter of Bud Lerner that was raced once last February. She romped home an easy winner over Hal Price Headleys Sparta, with Mag Mell from the Wheatley Stable, taking third from C. V. Whitneys Hollyhock. The only other starter was the Greentree Stables Torita. With no delay at the post the five left in the same stride and Malley at once took command with Little Miracle, a lead that ! filly was never to surrender. Sparta and Hollyhock raced closely after the daughter of Bud Lerner but Malley had Little Miracle under slight restraint as the other two gained on his mount. After turning into the stretch he shook up Little Miracle and she drew away to be the winner by five lengths. Sparta hung on to save second place by a length while Hollyhock quit badly to be beaten four lengths for third by Mag Mell. Torita, the only other starter, was never a contender.
