LONGWORK FOR INDIAN BROOM Scheduled for Hard Trial Before Departure for Louisville. Trainer Cannon Says Sulkiness in Recent Trial Means Nothing Frisco Turfmen Back Taylor Star. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 16 Indian Broom, winner of the Marchbank Handicap and reigning western turf sensation, will be given a stiff distance workout before he departs for Churchill Downs to compete against the nations best in the sixty-second renewal of the Kentucky Derby, May 2. His final trial in the West, which will be made over the Tanforan track, on which he recently made a worlds record for one and one-eighth miles, will be watched with interest, especially by the local turfmen who have wagered liberally on his chances in the Churchill Downs feature. Trainer Darrell Cannon is of the opinion that Indian Brooms inclination to sulk in a recent workout means little, and he is confident that the son of Brooms will give a good account of himself in the East. Jockey George Burns, who has definitely drawn the riding assignment on Indian Broom in the big race, is elated over his opportunity to compete against eastern saddle stars and is anxious to get going. Indian Broom leaves for Louisville Sunday evening and is due to arrive in Kentucky, April 22. Trainer Cannon revealed that the second string of Maj. Austin C. Taylor, numbering fifteen head, is training on Taylors private track, near Vancouver, B. C, in charge of ex-jockey Scotty Craigmile. Cannon will pick them up after his return from Kentucky with Indian Broom. Top Row and Azucar, which finished second and third, respectively, to Indian Broom in the Marchbank Handicap, were on the track for gallops Thursday morning. Top Row worked at Tanforan, while Azucar took a breeze at Bay Meadows. Azucar is pointing for the ,000 added Fashion Stakes to be run off at Bay Meadows Saturday afternoon. Special Agent was also galloped today and eased up three-quarters in 1:14. The Bay Meadows meeting has been disappointing to date, and the management, and in fact almost every person connected ; with the track, are at a loss to account for . the lack of interest. The handle fell below . 00,000 Wednesday despite, the fact that the weather was fine and it was Ladies Day. ; Only once at Tanforan did business fall ; below the 00,000 mark, and that day was . cold, rainy and altogether disagreeable.
