CHESAPEAKE STAKES AND TEXAS DERBY TODAY i t Each Has Important Bearing on Com-plexion of Kentucky Derby Field Grand Slam, Postage Due, Bright Plumage and Teufel in Havre de Grace Fixture The Fighter and Sangreal Best in Texas Derby The two outstanding races of today, the Chesapeake Stakes at Havre de Grace and the Texas Derby at Arlington Downs, should attract much attention everywhere because of the presence in both stakes of notable Kentucky Derby candidates. In the Chesapeake are such as Grand Slam, Postage Due, Teufel, Bright Plumage and others, while the Milky Way Farms trio of The Fighter, Sangreal and Doran, also Ttennob and Rushaway are the most prominent of those named for the Texas Derby. The result of both events may have an important bearing on the complexion of the Kentucky Derby field and, naturally, everything in reference to these valuable features should be interesting to all. ARLINGTON, Texas, April 17. The Texas Derby is at hand. Afield of eleven, composed of five colts, three fillies and an equal number of geldings will battle for the Lone Star States richest turf prize. The nine furlongs journey, which carries 5,000 in added money, will be run at the Texas Jockey Clubs palatial Arlington Downs about five oclock tomorrow afternoon. It will be the fifth event of an eight-race card. Showers are predicted, but Texans have little faith in weather forecasts, and little hope is entertained that the prevailing drought will be broken. The three sets of entries the Milky Way Farms of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, which comprises The Fighter, Sangreal and Doran; B. Hernandez Flag Cadet andLolschen, and A. G. Tarns Rushaway and Miss Bam are among the field. Lolschen, Miss Bam and Seventh Heaven represent the fairer sex and, while Seventh Heavens entry was unexpected, her chances will be greater in the event of a muddy track prevailing. The colts and geldings carry 120 pounds each, and the fillies, with their sex allowance, get in under 115 pounds. No filly has played an important part in the three previous runnings, which went to Bobsled, Plight and Roman Soldier, and, despite Lolschens brilliant second to Rushaway when the latter established a new track record in winning the Louisiana Derby, they again appear to be overmatched. Although the Milky Way entry will be an overwhelming choice, there are many not willing to concede victory to any one of the ; trio, and if it was possible to wager on each separately, it would be hard to choose between The Fighter and Sangreal. Both ran a mile and seventy yards in 1:42 for new track records here, and both have won three races since the opening. Last year The Fighter won two stakes and Sangreal one, and tomorrow they will be handled by the two leading riders here Alfred Robertson, who will be astride The Fighter, and Dan Brammer, who will direct Sangreal. Leon "Buddy" Haas has been engaged to pilot Doran. Not since the days of Bubbling Over, Bag-enbaggage and Boot to Boot, when this powerful E. R. Bradley trio were sweeping all Derbys before them, has one establishment held such a strong hand for Derby honors, and should this powerful entry, directed by these three brilliant riders, be repulsed, it will be one of the most stunning blows since racing was revived in the Lone Star State. While the Bradley three-year-olds made history for Idle Hour Stock Farm breeding, The Fighter and Sangreal have an opportunity of adding further laurels to the re- Continued on twenty-second page. i i L ; " ! : ; ; , 1 . i 1 1 3 1 1 I ? Both are grandsons of the great stallion, which was imported to this country after Sir Gallahad III., had been so successful. Granting the Mars eligibles everything belonging to them, even to Dorans good fourth in the Taylor Purse last Saturday, admirers of Ttennob are strong in their belief that he is capable of earning the 2,800 that will go to the winner in the event eleven start He had plenty of excuses in the Santa Anita Derby, which was won by He Did, and after a disappointing effort in a sprint affair here, he came back to give The Fighter a stubborn battle in the Taylor Purse. Since then, he has worked a good mile and part-owner and trainer Anthony Pelleteri, who, due to injuries, has been able only to direct the colts final preparations, believes the horse that beats the son of For Fair will get the pot of gold. Another given strong consideration is A. G. Tarns Rushaway. Since purchased from Joseph E. Widener by the Canadian sportsman, the son of Haste has steadily improved. His - most notable achievement was in the Louisiana Derby and after disappointing in the James Bowie Purse when he was badly beaten by Sangreal, he has worked a fast mile and a furlong. Those to favor his chances point out that a majority of the horses are not at their best the first time they race over the local strip. Of the remaining eligibles, Holl Image, winner of the Arkansas Derby, and B. Hernandez Flag Cadet appear the strongest contenders. Holl Image has a victory to his credit since arriving here and Flag Cadet was a bang-up third to Sangreal and Saver-nake in the James Bowie. Lolschen is also named for the Roman Soldier Handicap, while Joe Roberts, owner of Tugboat Frank, stated Friday that he did not intend to start his colt However, the liberal distribution of the 5,000 added purse to five monies was the incentive for attracting several additional starters. Johnny Longden is named to ride both Rushaway and Miss Bam and it believed owner Tarn will place his reliance in Rushaway. Although last Saturdays program was the best ever to be offered in the Lone Star State, tomorrows card excels it. The Roman Soldier Handicap, which will be decided at one mile and seventy yards, attracted a field of nine, many of which will be under colors in the rich Centennial Handicap on closing day. Our Count, double stakes winner here last spring, will carry the top impost of 110 pounds. The Deaf Smith Purse, the fourth event and another of the features, will mark the 1936 debut of Forever Yours. This speedy daughter of Toro, which won the Lassie Stakes and Spinaway Stakes for the Milky Way Farms, will be opposed by Bay Bubble, Headliner, Inscona, Whisking, Polish Beau, Heart Break and Prince Fox. Two-year-olds that have not won two races meet at four and a half furlongs for the opening event and twelve top-notch performers from the claiming ranks will traverse a mile and a sixteenth for the Plight Purse and" seventh event In order to aid in printing the vast number of programs expected to be needed for the 30,000 or more patrons, scratch time has been moved up to 8 oclock, but the first race will go to the post at the usual time of 2:15 oclock.
