Ride of Ira Hanford Plays Big Part in 1 Success of Clark Racer Weather Chilly for. the Sport. NEW YORK, N. "X"., April 17. Robert S. ; Clarks Malbrouk, making his first start t since last fall, was winner of the best offers - ing of the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Ja- - maica today when he won the Baisley Purse 2 in a close finish with the Greentree Stables 3 First Minstrel. Well back of the pair, J. B. Partridges Prince Abbot easily saved third I from Brindle, the only other starter. For the third day of the new season, there ; was a decided drop in temperature and, while the weather was wintry, there was a l good crowd out at the Long Island plant, , and the sport furnished was excellent. In the feature offering, Malbrouk was so i fractious that he was taken to a position t outside the stalls, and that proved an ad-; . vantage. As the four left, Hanford sent him along at a sprinting pace, and he was show- . ing the way in the short run to the first : turn to never afterward be threatened. As : the back stretch was reached, Hanford took : a slight hold of his head, while Coucci was : sending First Minstrel along in second . place two lengths away. Brindle raced third and Prince Abbot was close after the : j son of Brown Bud. These positions were maintained in the , run through the back stretch and, making . from that turn, 4 Coucci went to work on First Minstrel and moved up slightly on the son of Blenheim, but Hanford was sitting still on the Clark colt and riding a wonderfully cool and confident race. Coucci was asking First Minstrel for his best at the head of the stretch, and he continued to gain, but Hanford had not gone to the whip on Malbrouk, and, holding his mount together magnificently, he kept him at his task to be past the line winner by a head. The effort of First Minstrel to run the winner down carried him out two lengths before Prince Abbot, which readily outfooted Brindle when the real racing began through the final three furlongs. The race run by Malbrouk was an excellent one for a first effort since last fall, and the ride of Little Ira Hanford was a factor of importance in the score. John Morans Nandi was an easy winner of the opening six furlongs dash that brought out a big field of cheap ones. Jumping into an instant lead, the daughter of Stimulus dominated all the running to score by three lengths over Joseph Wormsers Cynwyd, with Philip Biebers Falermian taking third from Vera Cruz. William Woodwards Royal Fox gave the chairman of The Jockey Club his first purse of the new season when he ran down Hal Price Headleys Fraidy Cat to take the second race at six furlongs. Third went to Andy Schuttingers Fortification and with a more energetic ride than that of Eye, she would probably have taken the place. Charles Thieriots Epical was fourth, and Black Mischief was the only other starter. Fraidy Cat and Epical were the two that raced away closely lapped to open up an early lead on the others and they went stride for stride until Epical had enough and dropped back well beaten, while Fraidy Cat drew out to a lead of two lengths. In the meantime, Fortification was making up ground rapidly in third place, and Royal Fox was also improving his position. Into the stretch Fraidy Cat still looked a ; certain winner, but in the last furlong he tired suddenly and Royal Fox, under a i strong drive by Stout, came alongside and on by to be winner by three lengths in that last furlong. Fraidy Cat was tiring so badly that it seemed Fortification was also going i to run him down, but Eye gave up in the last furlong himself and, finishing -with no help from her rider, the mare was beaten scant two lengths for the place. After racing with Fraidy Cat in the early stages, : Epical quit badly while Black Mischief was j outrun all the way. j John Hay Whitneys Majority Rule, a son of Pompey and Ratification, that was only j sent to the post twice last year, was winner over a big band of maidens that raced in the third, another six furlongs dash. While J he won by three lengths, it was only after he had been hard driven by Coucci and it j was not much of a race. Mrs. William Rus-sells Social Error raced to second place, and third went to William Zeigler, Jr.s Hellespont when he easily took that share f the purse from Chief Yeoman. The start was a bit straggling when Some Play was left, while Golden Seal got away slowly. Social Error left in full stride and was soon well clear with Majority Rule show- j ing the way to the others and Black Brigade j third place. Bogertin, after breaking rather slowly, moved up in resolute fashion the field turned from the back stretch, and Golden Seal, after his misfortune at the . start, was also rushed up, but both of them c were soon through, turning from the back stretch. t Coucci had Majority Rule under a drive an effort to run down Social Error, but the Brooms filly was still showing the way i when she turned into the stretch, but the t Coucci drive was bringing results and a fur- c long from home Majority Rule had caught the filly. Never easing up on his mount, Coucci kept the son of Pompey going to have him winner by three lengths. Social l Error had saved second place by two lengths 1 and Hellespont had come into the picture in t the stretch to easily save third. In the fifth, a five furlongs dash for maid- 1 en juvenile fillies, Duval Headley trotted out t a smart miss in All Agog, a daughter of t Boatswain and Supryse. Showing a great i burst of speed, this filly made a show of f her company to score -over the Middleburg Stables Belle Elan, with the Wheatley t Stables Drawbridge, favorite of the field, 3 beating Drowsy for third. All Agog was 1 alert leaving the stalls, opened up a three c length lead in the first furlong, and once c in front she never was threatened, to be winner by two lengths. s
