GRIFFWOOD PURSE DIVIDED 9 Split Feature at Havre de Grace J Furnishes Thrilling Races. Swashbuckler Takes Measure of Jean Bart t and Others in First Division Jeffords Colt Finishes Second. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 17. The 2 Griffwood Purse, an allowance affair divided I into two sections and run as the fourth and 1 fifth events, were the principal races on the program offered by the Harford Agricultural - and Breeders Association at Havre de - Grace today. Framed for three-year-old 1 non-winners of two races, eight of that age i met in the first of the dual features and I eleven competed in the second division, both 1 of which were decided over three-quarters. Both contests were thrilling events, and in a measure atoned for the lack of a higher grade attraction, which would have been the Colonial Purse, at a mile and one-sixteenth that failed to fill properly, to be . placed on the card. The first division of the Griffwood Purse, with eight starters, provided an interesting contest, and it saw Mrs. Janon Fisher. Jr.s Swashbuckler, a nominee for the Preakness Stakes, upsetting calculations when he took ; the measure of W. M. Jeffords Jean Bart, , Foxcatcher Farms Sunrap and the five : others that were led to the finish by Green Mist. Making his first appearance in silks since his three-year-old debut in the Inaugural Handicap at Bowie, the Fisher colt showed the benefit of training received in that event and he led virtually throughout to prevail by little more than a length at the end of the sprint. Ridden by E. Fallon and conceding weight to his formidable rivals, the Fisher colt found his way into the lead after leaving the back stretch, then held his position intact for the remainder of the journey to reach the last line a length and one-quarter in advance of the Jeffords colt, which carried . the bulk of support in the wagering. Jean Bart had some excuses for his failure. He . suffered from lack of racing room on the i far side of the course, but when clear raced ; outside his opponents to gain steadily and . it is probable with better racing luck he may have upheld the esteem of his back- 1 ers. Sunrap was beaten a length for second -place as he took third, while Green Mist 1 easily took the measure of the others. There was a much closer finish in the 1 second division of the Griffwood that was j the fifth, and once again calculations were -i upset when Shandon Farms Galmica captured winning honors. He scored in a thrill- , ing drive to triumph by a short head over ; Mrs. Marion DuP. Somervilles Tx-ansporter, ; with Miss Ethel Hills Deliberate in a driv- ; ing third. In this most support centered on Night i Play, but he could never gain a position ; better than fifth in the running and finished r in that, place at the close of the contest that had eleven starters. To effect his triumph Galmica came from a trailing position, and at the finish, drove up on the outside to re- ceive the decision over the Somerville colt 1 which, in turn, was out a length and a half ; before Deliberate. Ten of the lowliest maidens on the grounds met in the introductory offering, a gallop , of one mile and seventy yards and it pre-sented an opportunity for G. Mohrs Bobs Boys at liberal odds to graduate from the maiden ranks when he registered in a thrill- , ing drive. Ridden by C. Hanford and coming from behind to run down the early leaders the victorious son of In Memoriam waged a thrilling battle after getting to the front in the last quarter mile and barely lasted I to capture honors by a head from T. Ma-lones Taranto. At the end these .two were but a short half length in advance of Bomar Stables Forest Play with Star Scout fav- ored in the speculation in fourth position "c and well back of the fighting leaders. j Seven juveniles under claiming conditions t met for decision in the daily test for juve- t niles that was the second on the card and i it saw Gold Band racing to victory for the j Bomar Stable when he accounted for the four and one-half furlongs sprint in easy r a fashion. Accorded good support in the j speculation the Bomar colt registered his 0 success by five lengths when he led Mrs. C. Phillips Cathy P. over the last line of the abbreviated journey with third annexed by Slump, one of a pair that performed for A. G. Vanderbilt. 7 The largest field of the afternoon met in I the third for three-year-old fillies. In this v Letter Box, from the locally-owned Straw- , bridge Stable, emerged victorious and her score came in a thrilling finish when she earned a nose verdict over E. K. Brysons ? Pumice Stone at the end of the six furlongs of with third going to E. Sachsenmaiers Laura S., when she led home Araho Stables So- x ciety Column and eight others in the field of twelve. A short delay occurred in the chute be- . fore the dozen starters were sent on their j. in irney and it found Laura S. having the most speed to be sent into the van by Jones. Going down the back stretch Pumice Stone as raced at the heels of the. Sachsenmaier filly while Rolling Along and Sylvia G. followed !! closely lapped behind the pace and leading the others of which Letter Box was in sixth place. b in
