LATONIA DERBY TO BE RUN I ON MAY 23 ?15,000 ADDED LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 17. The Latonia Derby, principal stake offering of the Latonia Jockey Club, will be run on the first day of the twenty-five day spring meeting opening Saturday, May 23, it was announced here late yesterday by Col. Matt J. Winn, executive director of the Covington track. The race, exclusively for three-year-olds, will carry an added purse of 5,000 and an additional ,000 if the victor happens to have won the Kentucky Derby to be run at Churchill Downs May 2. This decision was reached after officials had conferred with a number of owners of prospective candidates for the race and decided on the selected date, the old fixture is assured every outstanding three-year-old in the West, together with usual support from eastern stables. Officials are satisfied that May 23 is the most practical date because of these assurances. It will be run over a distance of a mile and a quarter and, in -addition to the prize money, the owner of the winner will receive a valuable trophy. Date for closing of nominations has not been fixed, but in all probabilities the final date for subscriptions will be May 2.
