WEIGHTS FOR SPEED HANDICAP Racing Secretary Morrison Assigns Fort Springs Top Weight for Bay Meadows Feature. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 23. Racing secretary M. H. Morrison is of the opinion, that Maj. Austin C. Taylor, whose animalsj have just about cleaned up the stakes in! the San Francisco district this spring, has the best horse in the ,500 added Speed Handicap, to be decided at Bay Meadows Saturday. Morrison has placed top weight of 118 on Fort Springs, the horses with which Major Taylor won the opening handicap at this track, and that weight is five pounds more than to be carried by the horse deemed second best. Fort Springs proved by his fine workout? of five furlongs in 1:01, over the Tanforan track Thursday morning, that he is fit and ready for the fray, and although a Ifirge field will lessen his chances, as he is a slow beginner, he is expected to bs running over horses at the end. Fort Springs half mile was :48. Next to Fort Springs in the matter of poundage comes Cloud DOr, which was the high weight in the Opening Handicap, won by the Taylor sprinter. Cloud DOr will carry 113 pounds, which makes a difference of six pounds in his favor from the Inaugural feature in which he was beaten a length and a head by Fort Springs. R. D. Powers, which split Fort Springs in the Opening Handicap, has 102 pounds, just two more than he carried in that race. Lady Bowman, winner of her last two starts at Bay Meadows, is in the Speed, with 112 pounds, while Campillo, Clean Out and Dark Winter have. 111 pounds each. The Speed Handicap gives promise of being an exceptionally interesting contest, inasmuch as those with the early foot will cut out a fast pace. The track mark for the six furlongs distance is 1:10, held by Black Board, and, while it is doubtful if that good mark can be equaled, the winner of the Speed may come mighty close to turning the trick. Following are the weights announced for the Speed Handicap: Fort Springs, 118; Cloud DOr, 113;-Lady Bowman, 112; Campillo, 111; Clean Out, 111; Dark Winter, 111; Stakva, 110; Slapped, 107; Nilus, 107; St. Stephens, 106; Malmaison, 105; Uppermost, 105; Sea Cliff, 104; R. D. Powers, 102; Velociter, 100; Amy Cooper, 96.
