i j THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF mi SIMARK, Bay Colt, by Boojum Helvetia; Property of Wheatley Stable; Has Not Started This Year but Is Reported to Be Training Well at Aqueduct. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Performances. By NORMS HOYDEN. . , M - Through the- first half of last season, White Cockade appeared the best two-year-old James Fitzsimmons was training, but as- the Saratoga season approached its end, Snark gained favor, although not making as good an impression as did his stablemate in the spring. Snark, owned by the Wheatley- Stable of Mrs. H. C. Phipps and her brother, Ogden Mills, came very close, to- being- a leader in. his division, but his best was not quite good enough. Because- Snark, one of the few of Boojums getr gave everything ha had on. several occasions and couldnt quite hold his own, the feeling prevails that he will not prove an outstanding three-year-old, although he should develop into a good winner. Snark already has reached his Teak apparently, and. those which will dominate three-year-old racing are still coming- up. r Boojum was a very fast horse that never had. the chance to. be trained on,, and, he was by John P. Grier, whose get principally have been middle distance runners and sprinters. Through his dam, Helvetia, Snark should get considerable stamina as she was by Hourless from a daughter of Sardanapale, the next dam by Carbine; The Wheatley-colt also gets another cross to Carbine through his sire. In his two-year-old races, Snark showed a disposition to race from behind, but this trait did not bring him any victories when, the distances were lengthened out. His two triumphs were scored in five furlongs dashes over his home track at Aqueduct, but one of them was in the Great American Stakes. He finished second in the Champagne Stakes, third in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and fourth in both the Futurity and Hopeful. Snark began campaigning at Hialeah Park in February by being a fast-closing third to Hi-Nelli and Grog, and then he was laid away until. April when he appeared in the Aberdeen Stakes in. which he was engulfed in the field of twenty-one. His next effort was in a maiden event at Aqueduct with the track slow, and he won by a. length and: a. half over Jean Bart A few days later he vas beaten by Postage Due, and then he accounted for the Great American at the direct expense of Parade Girl, Maeriel and Delphinium. At Arlington Park the son of Boojum was a close fourth to Deliberator, Nedrow r and White Cockade in a preliminary for the Arlington Futurity, but he was nowhere in the running of the latter contest, held over a muddy course. After a brief lay-off Shark reappeared in the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga and finished a bangrup. fifth after making up quite a few lengths through the stretch. Less than a length separated him from the victorious Crossbow TJ. In the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, Snark; came from far back: in the stretch to gain third honors back of The Fighter and White Cockade, and he staged another such closing rush in the Hopeful after being- well back in the early stages to gain fourth honors. He was little more than a length away from Red Rain at the finish of that dash of six and one-half furlongs and was going- faster at the end. Sun Teddy and Bien Jolr also led him home, while he proved the- master of Coldstream, Tintagel, Bold Venture, San-, greal and other good colts. Snark gained many supporters by the manner in which he ran through the stretch in his Saratoga races, and he went to Belmont Park reckoned as one of the outstanding candidates for the Futurity. In the Champagne Stakes,, the son of Boojum engaged in a duel practically all the way over the six and one-half furlongs straight course with Brevity, bufeathe J. E. Widener colt held him in check to win by a neck. In the Futurity Snark was in second place entering the final quarter, and with a furlong to go Tintagel was only a head in front, but the Wheatley colt had enough an instant later and dropped back to finish in fourth place a length back of the winner. Hollyrood and Jean Bart had come on to capture second and third honors. Snark was given a slight rest and then prepared for the Pimlico Futurity at a mile and one-sixteenth. He loomed strongly at the half-mile ground and. then weakened. His last three races, especially the two at Belmont,, gave Snark wonderful opportunities to crash through to the uppermost bracket,, but he just didnt have the stuff, and it isnt reasonable to suppose another year to his age will make any difference, in this respect. Although an eligible for the Kentucky Derby,. Snark doesnt seem to. be training- as vigorously as his stablemates, White Cockade,. Granville and Teuf el. f Broomstick.. Ben Brush fWhisk Broom IT.
