GAY EDWARD was kept within striking distance of the early leaders, assumed command when OLD REB began tiring and, hard ridden, barely lasted. FICKLE CHANCE began moving up on the inside leaving the back stretch, closed with a rush after saving a world of ground and would probably have been the winner in another stride. GREAT HASTE closed gamely on the outside through the stretch. BOSTON BROOK dropped back at the start and was passing tiring horses through the last eighth. TUGBOAT FRANK, away well, lacked speed to hold his position and dropped back in the run to the first turn, began improving his position gradually in the last three eighths, wore down the leaders when reaching the stretch and, roused several times, drew out. PICCOLO bore in immediately after the start, was badly outrun for the first half mile, moved up on the outside thereafter and, closing with a rush, was up to take the place in the last stride. GALLANT GAY, steadied along in back of the early pacemaker, assumed the lead when called upon, but was unable to withstand the closing challenge of the first two. SEABISCUIT drew away into a good lead, was placed to punishment at intervals, but was unable to keep pace in the last three-eighths. FAUST was unable to reach the leaders. COLUMBIANA, steadied along within striking distance of the early leaders, failed to respond when called upon. SANDWRACK. outpaced early, improved his position steadily when making hi-, effort in the stretch, wore down UNDULATE for the lead and just failed to withstand the winners bid UNDULATE drew away into a long lead and held on well to the end, but was not good enough for the first two. FAIRSICKLE, under steadying reserve early, loomed up threateningly midway of the turn, but was unable to keep pace in the drive. BUSTER BOY chased the early pacemaker closest, but was unable to improve his position under punishment. STRIDEAWAY broke down straightening out in the back stretch and interfered sharply with ALL READY II. when dropping back. Overweight — Undulate, 3 pounds. Continued on sixteenth page. IP AND UP moved up stoutly on the outside in the back stretch, came to the inside after making the turn, was forced to case back, saved ground in the stretch, but had to take up when HOKlAO bore in and was then taken to the outside, but was unable to improve his position. LIGHT BROOK was never a factor. CAPT. JERRY dropped back steadily after reaching the back stretch.
