Leading from end to end of the mile and one-sixteenth over a sloppy course, the son of Victorian and Note o Love ran the distance in 1:48% under an impost of 120 pounds to defeat Mrs. R. H. Heighes Beveau, a four-year-old, by two lengths. The latter was equally weighted with the winner. G. L. Strykers Alit was a half length further away in third place with Galmica at his heels. Scudder completed the field. The track conditions were changed to sloppy for the fifth race, due to showers which fell intermittently during the afternoon beginning just before the second event. Despite the threat of rain, one of the best week-day crowds of the meeting turned out. Seven sprinting platers of the middle grade clashed in the fifth, with Mrs. H. W. Stewarts Cruising gaining his first triumph of the Maryland season when he led home Mrs. R. H. Heighes Zay, the favorite, by two lengths. H. Neusteters Masked Gal was five lengths away, in third place, after hav- i ing set the pace to the stretch. Under the guidance of A. Shelhamer, Cruising moved up fast on the turn and overtook Masked Gal right after entering the stretch to draw away into a clear lead, which he held against Zays bid. The latter lacked ■peed in the early stages and raced wide j when improving her position on the outside, but she could not menace the Whiskalong i gelding. Tuan refused to begin with the others and was pulled up in the stretch when he fell lame. Vanda Cerulea, owned by Mrs. A. J. Abel and ridden by her husband, outgamed Parva Stella in the opening dash of six furlongs. After racing Shaggy Ann into defeat during Larkspur had Parva Stella held safe through the stretch. A half length separated them at the end, and Cora Kay was three lengths away in third position, with Bally Bay fourth. The steeplechase was taken by Mrs. James Parks Bold Fellow, the favorite, in easy fashion. The Brookmeade Stables Caesars Ghost was second, and Swimalong took third j place among the nine maiden jumpers meeting at two miles. Bold Fellow was held far back in the field by P. McGinnis for more j than a turn of the field, but he moved up quickly and assumed command entering the final half to score by five lengths. Lady Wisdom fell at the eleventh fence, and both she and her rider slid on the turf for many feet. The jockey, C. Eagan, was not injured, but the filly came out of the accident considerably lame. Petee Blue, racing for H. L. Strauss, up- . held the esteem of the public and earned his first score of the session when he made I a show of nine other nondescript plater distance performers that were engaged for the fourth. Dropped down in selling price and j ably handled by Carl Hanford, the son of ! Petee-Wrack came from behind the pace to capture honors by four lengths. _ — i M
