INCREASE IN MUTUEL HANDLE PAWTUCKET, R. I., May 13.— Mutuel play for the first nine days at Narragansett Park has increased by 15 per cent over a .similar period last year and this despite the fact that the opening of the 1936 season was six weeks earlier in the season than in 1935. In the first nine days of 1935 the mutuels total was ,993,753 for a daily average of 32,639. The first nine days of 1936 shows a total of ,414,996, for a daily average of 79,444. Favorites have stood up in surprisingly good fashion, considering that for the first time this year horses from Florida, California, Texas and Maryland were coming into contention. The percentage of win-I ning favorites to date is 30.
