H0LLYR00D TO START IN PREAKNESS STAKES Headley Star Added After Sparkling Workout at Belmont Park ■ t Bien Joli and Bright Light Eliminated From Field, Leaving Thirteen Sure Starters in Saturdays Big Event — Bold Venture Due Today » BALTIMORE, Md., May 13.— Addition of Hollyrood to the probable field and definite elimination of Bien Joli and Bright Light were among the important developments today in connection with Saturdays renewal of the historic Preakness Stakes. All candidates that have been trained here have completed the important part of their preparation and with the arrival of the remainder tomorrow from New York all starters will be at Pimlico. Hollyrood, winner of the Pimlico Futurity last fall, unexpectedly entered Preakness calculations after he had turned in a sparkling workout at Belmont Park yesterday morning, and trainer Duval Headley today advised Maryland Jockey Club officials that he was I shipping the son of High Cloud here tomorrow. Also coming from the New York course tomorrow are Morton Schwartz Bold Ven-| ture, the outstanding favorite for the Preak-j ness by virtue of his Kentucky Derby victory, and Mrs. Silas B. Masons Santa Anita Derby winner, He Did. Memory Book, successful in the Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap at Laurel last fall, arrived from New -York today in charge of John Gaver and will be the Greentree Stables representative in the Preakness. Silvio Coucci will come from New York, Saturday, to ride the son of St. Germans. John J. Greely, trainer of the Shandon Farm Stable horses, stated today that Bright Lights had not trained up to expectations for the Preakness and, therefore, could not be considered among the likely starters. GIANT KILLER DOUBTFUL. Giant Killer also became a doubtful starter today when trainer Preston Burch was advised by Wayne Wright that he would not be available to ride the colt because of an engagement for his contract employer Saturday in a stake at Belmont Park. With Giant Killer out, Jean Bart will become the lone hope of Walter M. Jeffords. Capable jockeys for Saturdays stakes are at a premium, and up to a late hour today Duval Headley had not been able to make a definite selection of Hollyroods rider. William Saunders, contract jockey for Hal Price Headley will remain in New York to handle Whopper in the Metropolitan Handicap. It was learned here that trainer Headley also is looking for a top notch rider for Sparta, which is being sent to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks. The status of the Brookmeade Stables Preakness candidates, Corundum and Delphinium, has not been definitely learned here, but the colors of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane are expected to be carried by at least one of the colts. Delphinium was engaged at Belmont Park today, and his performance probably will be the deciding factor. Advices from New York were to the effect that E. R. Bradley will rely on Bow and Arrow for his representation in the Preakness. This colt, unbeaten in three starts this season, has trained very satisfactorily here under the direction of William Hurley. A field of thirteen for the Preakness seems assured unless a change in weather causes the track to become muddy. Showers are predicted for tomorrow. TRAINING COMPLETED. All Maryland-trained Preakness candidates have concluded their training for the weekend prize with the appearance of five colts I in long tests this morning. None of the quintet was asked for real speed, their trainers being satisfied as to the condition of their charges. Jean Bart and Giant Killer, which will comprise the entry of Walter M. Jeffords, Philadelphia sportsman, were worked together by trainer Preston Burch, but the former went a mile and a quarter with the latter being pulled up after a mile. Jean Bart went the long distance in 2:10 breezing while Giant Kiler was timed the mile in 1:44, also going easily at the end. The pair began at the furlong post and went the opening quarter together in :24% and the half mile in :50. At this point Jean Bart forged away and wont the three-quarters in 1:14?3 and mile in 1:41%. His time for the nine furlongs was 1:56. Giant Killer was timed Continued on tuenty-nirith page. H0LLYR00D TO START IN PREAKNESS STAKES Continued from first page. the three-quarters in 1:15%. He was not equipped with blinkers, which aid him when racing. Transporter, hope of Mrs. Marion duPont Somerville also was sent a mile and a quarter by trainer Selby Burch and he was timed j in 2:12 breezing. With no blinkers on, the son of The Porter moved the opening half mile in :50, three-quarters in 1:17 and the mile in 1:44%. He broke at the stand and worked around to the three-quarters post. Grand Slam went over the mile distance in 1:44 breezing, being tabbed the half mile in :50 and six furlongs in 1:17%. The Bomar Stable colt acted well in the trial and trainer R. E. Potts was highly pleased. A very dull effort was displayed by ! Knight Warrior in going nine furlongs in 2:02, driving. He worked the opening quar-1 ter in :25, half in :50%, three-quarters in 1:17% and the mile in 1:46% and had to be ! hard ridden to do the final eighth in :15%.
