BRIGHT BIRD FAILS BACKERS Master Time Finishes in Front of Favorite at Agawam Jockey A. Cooper Has Big Day. AGAWAM, Mass., June 1. Coming from behind in the stretch, Master Time, from the stable of Mrs. E. E. Russell, earned a clean cut victory over the public choice, Bright Bird, in the sixth. Some four lengths back . of the first mentioned pair came Race Craft in third position, a head in front of Home Work. The start was a fast one with Balmacan, favored by the inner rail position, rushing to the front in the run to the first turn, but Cooper had Bright Bird right at his throat latch, the pair running as one around the first turn. Back of them came Master Time with jockey F. A. Smith rating him along. Once straightened out in the back stretch Bright Bird shook off Balmacan to go on to what for a time appeared a winning lead, but Master Time had yet to be contended with, Smith not making a move until midway on the stretch turn. Once called upon, the four-year-old soon cut into the margin that separated him from the leader until at the eighth post he was at Bright Birds saddle girth. Smith swung his whip once, then resorted to hand riding, the son of Master Charlie gave his best, drawing clear of Bright Bird in the final few yards to win in an easy manner. A crowd that numbered well beyond the expectations of the management was on hand to greet the sport of kings for the fifth day of the Agawam meeting, while the mutuel handle increased steadily as the afternoon progressed. Clear overhead skies, despite the high winds, made it ideal racing weather, while the followers of form and the second choices had things much to their liking when the respective choices won the majority of the events. The flashy apprentice A. Cooper, again arrived in front in the fifth race for his third victory of the afternoon. This time he was astride his contract employers Barbara J., which scored by six lengths. Branncastle Farms The Millay was second, while R. Tennants Sunny Tom was third. Jockey A. Cooper duplicated his feat ot Saturday when he again brought home four winners during the afternoon, riding his fourth in the eighth race while astride Sickle Hour for his employer, W. C. Weant. A. length and a half back of the winner was Rhodesia, with St. Christopher third.
