SUN EGRET VICTORIOUS Resumes Maryland Career With Triumph in Rowe Memorial. Compton-Bedwell Combination Scores Another Victory at Bowie Best Backed Starter. BOWIE, Md., April 2. Sun Egret, back In home territory after a stake success at Santa Anita, resumed his Maryland career by galloping to victory in the Rowe Memorial, the six furlongs handicap which featured this afternoons sport at Prince George Park. He scored much in the same fashion as he accounted for his November final over this track when he breezed past the judges a length and a half in front of Parmelee T., with the latter saving place honors from Clocks by a half length. Another head away was Wise Prince. The Sun Briar Polly Egret colt, carrying 114 pounds and conceding weight on the scale to every one of his older rivals, raced the distance in the excellent time of 1:13 to win -with speed to spare. He was the best-backed horse of the afternoon, at 17 to 20. It was the fifth score in seven 1938 chances for the A. C. Compton star and added ,250 to his earnings this season. ATTENDANCE DROPS. As was the case in the opening day stake, the triumph was an extremely popular one with the half-holiday assemblage. This was not up to the usual standard due to the scattering early morning rains, which continued at intervals throughout the afternoon. The track had not dried out overnight and was muddy for the competition. It was this which made Sun Egrets time in the main race particularly good. Shelhamer, after winning two on the previous afternoon for the Compton-Bedwell forces, did not have a difficult task on Sun Egret. He had the Virginia-bred colt away forwardly and obtained clear passage on the outside while Clocks was setting the pace, . closely pressed by Higher Cloud. Turning for home, he moved past the leaders, to drive his mounts nose to the front at the head of the stretch and steadily increased his advantage. In the last sixteenth the Sun Briar three-year-old was going along in hand, with Shelhamer bobbing his head from side to side looking for opposition which never developed. DOG FLOWER WINS. The Millsdale Stable registered its first of the meeting when Dog Flower disposed of eleven rivals in the five and a half furlongs Pocahontas Purse. Five lengths back Vestale earned third money. Form followers started the day off with a winner when Polly Fair drove to a half length victory in a four furlongs opening dash for juveniles. Closest to William Zieg-lers colorbearer at the end was the pace-making Mystery Miss, with Barker four lengths further away. The daughter of Poly-! dor completed the distance in :49. Off very slowly, he had i to close an almost unbelicvcable gap to win going away by a pair of lengths with the. i tiring Rosarian his closest attendant. A neck farther away was Dona Dulcin, saving the place by a three-length margin.
