"" " I j - j Twenty Years of Future Books on KENTUCKY DERBY and the Results j 1929 ... ... . .J Derby fans had plenty of material for springtime congitation in 1929. Blue Larkspur and High Strung, the latter the winner of the 1928 Futurity in an "eyelash" finish with Roguish Eye, were first and second future book choices with Roguish Eye, Clyde Van Dusen and the West Coast "flash," Ervast, figuring so close together that the layers made the trio even at 10 to 1 and waited for public support to determine the third choice. Blue Larkspur opened at 7 to 1; High Strung at 8. Roguish Eyes stablemate in the J. J. Coughlin stable, Karl Eitel, was 25 to 1. Twink could be backed in the futures at 25. Naishapur was 50. So was Panchio, Windy City, Calf Roper, Minotaur, Paul Bunyan, Essare and Lord Braedalbane. The field that year, taken as a whole, had considerable class. Twenty-one horses went to the post, and a good line can be had on the all-around ability of the starters when it is noted not a single one of the actual contestants opened in the future book line at higher than 50 to 1. As training work progressed some of them did recede in the betting and reach 200 to 1 in the odds. Blue Larkspur, opening future book choice, pre-post and actual starting favorite, was a "Bradley" horse which did not win the Derby, and it is something of a paradox that the man who won four Derbys failed to win with undoubtedly the best horse he ever started in the great Louisville race. He went down steadily in the betting until he was quoted last at 2 to 1. Clyde Van Dusen on April 16 became the second choice and continued so into the race. He was the first son of Man o War to win the Derby and, strangely enough, he was about as large in stature as War Admiral, the last son of the great "Red" to win. Ervast was the forerunner of Indian Broom and other West Coast sensations that came East from California heralded as probable champions. He did not get to the post. Neither did Roguish Eye, High Strung nor Twink. The failure of Blue Larkspur to even place that year was blamed on the footing that day, much slop and mud prevailing. Following is a tabulation showing the actual finish of the race, the opening future book quotations, changes in the line and mutuel odds on all starters in the race: .
