T THREE -YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 BULL LEA, brown colt, by Bull Dog Rose Leaves; property of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm. Trained by F. Kearns. By NORRIS ROYDEN . i i Right from the beginning Bull Dog has been a pronounced success in the stud with a wonderful percentage of stakes winners, but his three crops of foals given distance-running opportunities failed to include an outstanding stayer, although several such, as St. Bernard, Floradora and Finance, were not far off that classification. Now, in his fourth crop to reach the age of three years, Bull Dog seems to have his best prospects for a distance runner in Bull Lea, big, handsome, well-made colt in Warren Wrights Calumet Farm stable. Bull Lea handled himself in the manner of a stayer last season and, furthermore, his breeding on his dams side. suggests the ability to go as far as thoroughbreds are asked to run. The Calumet colt is from the Ballot mare, Rose Leaves which, when mated with Negofol in 1922, produced Espino, winner over Crusader in the Lawrence Realization and second to that horse in the Belmont Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup. Espino also accounted for the Saratoga Cup, these races ranging in distances from a mile and one-half to two miles. Winner of two of his first four starts at Washington and Arlington Parks over the five and one-half furlongs distance, Bull Leas first opportunity for an important victory was in the Arlington Futurity, a six-furlongs race in which he went evenly throughout to finish fourth, just a length and a half behind the dead-heating Tiger and Teddys Comet, and a half-length back of C-Note. The following Saturday the Calumet colt competed in the Saratoga Special, coming on gradually at the wind-up of the six-furlongs dash to finish third to Pumpkin and Maetall, beaten two lengths in the time of 1:12. He didnt do quite so well in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes two weeks later, running fifth, as principal honors fell to Fighting Fox, with Mountain Ridge second and The Chief third. Next engagement of Bull Lea was in the Hopeful Stakes at six and one-half furlongs, for which a heavy track prevailed. Even though Bull Dogs get arent particularly partial to the soft going, Bull Lea was not at a disadvantage in the Hopeful, performing well enough to take second honors, three lengths back of Sky Larking.as .Fighting Fox ran third and C-Note fourth. The Calumet colt was bidding for the lead at the furlong pole when he jumped a path made by persons crossing to the infield, and this interrupted his striding sufficiently to prevent him from giving Sky Larking stronger argument towards the end. Bull Leas next and final start was in the Champagne Stakes, at six and, a half furlongs over the straight course at Belmont Park, and again he ran second, this time four lengths back of Menow, which went on to win the Futurity and the seasons two-year-old championship. The Calumet colt was going along smoothly back of Sky Larking as Menow set the pace when the Milky Way star suffered his broken leg. Bull Lea had to be puiled up sharply to avoid running into Sky Larking and, consequently, was unable to threaten Menow later, whether he possessed the ability or not. Just prior to the Futurity, Bull Lea showed up with a filling in the vicinity of his middle tendon, and his campaigning was concluded. He was shipped home to be turned out and displayed enough improvement during the winter to warrant a return to training this spring. Coming along steadily, Bull Lea is giving his connections increased hope that he will be able to fulfill his Kentucky Derby engagement, but he will have his first opportunity at Keeneland. Except for the possibility of his ailment recurring, Bull Lea rightfully appears the best-constituted of Bull Dogs get to go a distance. He was not possessed of high speed as a juvenile, but was able to keep coming and, judging by his physical type and at least one-half of his pedigree, he is a colt that should improve from his first season to the second. As to his class, theres little doubt, and he ought to be able to handle the weight. f Flying Fox 0rmc fAjax -i Vampire lAmie iCIamart J I Alice H L j f Bay Ronald Ulampton LRondeau....
