TIGER DERBY WINNER Twelve Thousand Watch Milky Way Colt Win Spa Race. Silver Sarah Finishes Second and Gov. Chandler Third Wins Purse and Trophy. HOT SPRINGS, Ark., April 2. More than 12,000 racing enthusiasts jammed their way into Oaklawn Park today to be present for the third running of the ,000 added Arkansas Derby at the picturesque track. Eleven went postward in the mile and a furlong contest, which brought together some of the finest three-year-olds in the country. The program, consisting of eight races, offered two handicaps in addition to the Derby, thus making the foremost offering of the season, and the meeting was closed in a blaze of glory. Mrs. E. V. Mars, owner of the Milky Way Farm, withdrew the maiden Farrell from the Derby field, thus reducing the number of starters to eleven, and the winners share of the contest was ,060. In addition to the monetary value, a silver trophy, symbolic of the Derby triumph, was presented by Gov. Carl Bailey of Arkansas, who was in attendance with a party of political friends on the occasion. Mrs. Mars Tiger won the Derby, as expected, with Silver Sarah second and Gov. Chandler third. Tiger is one of the most highly regarded of the eligibles for the Kentucky Derby, and todays victory served in the nature of a serious preparation for that race. Anna Grand, Charles Goffs chestnut filly, romped to an easy victory in the opening race on the card, which was over the Oak-lawn course route and designed exclusively for three-year-olds. Low Cuts finished second, and Oddesa Pride held on to third place. Breaking rapidly after acting fractiously at the starting gate. Determined was on the front end of the procession for the entire trip in the second race, in which a field of eleven went postward for the dash. The chestnut horse, from the stable of Mrs. C. C. Winters, scored by the decisive margin of five lengths over Yetive, while Count Cotton drew up in third place. Away in motion, Determined did hot Ipse any time in drawing clear of his opposition, and after the first quarter increased his margin as the race progressed. TWO STRAIGHT. Mrs. C. C. Winters stable furnished two straight winners when Odd Blue came from behind in the stretch drive to easily account for the third race on the card, in which five sprinters of the upper brackets engaged. Easy Sailing finished second, a length and a half in the wake of the winner, while Bright and Early, the favorite, landed in third place. Bright and Early was rushed into the lead right at the break" and showed a good burst of speed, but tired when challenged in the final quarter, and Odd Blue, which had been rated off the pace, moved into the lead in the last sixteenth. The winner was second choice in the betting and paid .90 for . The popularity of B. P. Woodsons courageous little sprinter, Leading Article, was increased considerably, as he came from behind in the Au Revoir Handicap, an Oak-lawn course distance contest, to gain the verdict by a length and a half over Trans-mutable, while Nations Taste finished third. Under the guidance of jockey Eddie De Prang, Leading Article followed in closest pursuit of Transmutable until straightened out in the stretch and when urged by his rider quickly responded to the bidding and overhauled the pacemaker. Moving up with a rush in the last three furlongs of the mile and one-sixteenth trip of the Farewell Handicap, fifth race on the card, Professor Paul easily accounted for the major portion of the purse, defeating The Queen by the decisive margin of two lengths, and Prince Torch landed in third place. Jockey M. Calvert was fined 0 for rough riding in the third race.
