NEW ATTENDANCE MARK Record Throng on Hand for Inaugural Card at Jamaica. Snark Accounts for Paumonok Handicap While El Chico Makes Good in Youthful Stakes. JAMAICA, N. T., April 16 The largest gathering in the history of the Jamaica track of the Metropolitan Jockey Club was present for the inauguration of the New York season and saw Wheatley Stables favored Snark account for the Paumonok Handicap renewal in his first appearance under colors this year. At the end of this ,500 fixture, the five-year-old son of Boo-jum was three lengths clear of Mrs. G. H. Emicks Rollin Home, with W. A. Carters Clodion third, another length away and inches before Wise Prince. The victory of the Aqueduct trained horse was impressive, as he carried top weight of 132 pounds and raced the distance in 1:11 to win easily after going wide on the turn for home and experiencing a quarter-hour post delay under his heavy burden. Likewise, his score was one of several during the matinee that proved highly popular with John Public, as he ruled a 16 to 5 favorite in a rather open betting race. PUBLIC CHOICE WINS. The secondary feature of the matinee was the Youthful and this also produced a victory for a public choice when El Chico was returned an even easier winner than Snark in the days main attraction. Snarks score swelled the Wheatley coffers to the tune of ,450 and proves he will be hard to beat in the Dixie at Pimlico, which is apt to be selected next for him by trainer Fitzsimmons. The opening of the local racing year was favored by an excellent weather break and the attendance mounted to 20,000. There was much congestion in the parking lots and over half of the attendance came by train. Society was out in full force. Continued on twentieth page. NEW ATTENDANCE MARK Continued from Jirst page. El Chico, making his first appearance under colors, won the initial two-year-old dash of the new season when he galloped off with the Youthful Stakes. The Ziegler colt, a son of John P. Grier and La Chica, had the services of jockey Nick Wall and after , assuming the lead early, never left the issue in much doubt, carrying the purple and red banner to the end of the five-eighths in 1:00. Four lengths back of him at the end Jack Horner was second for Jack Healey, just a head in front of Bill Gallaghers Wise Shine. Another length back Modern Youth was fourth. All eight named started, and the winner collected 3,400 in his stakes winning debut. El Chico went to the post a well backed choice, so well advertised was his ability. He broke alertly and went right with the better educated Jack Horner from a good start, soon taking the lead. Going to the far turn, he opened up on his rivals and swung for home with enough left to withstand a bid from Wise Shine at the top of the short stretch. From there to the wire he led easily. The new racing season opened with a race at a mile and a sixteenth for platers, and it resulted in a victory for the George D. Widener silks when Uallno led home Mrs. W. H. Canes Steepletop under a hustling ride by Wayne Wright, with Cleaveland Putnams Somali saving third from Money Muddle, and Old Story was the only other starter. After the finish Somali unseated D. Mill-tello as he was being pulled up, and he galloped along for a second circuit of the course before he was caught. Fortunately, both horse and rider escaped injury in the accident. MAIDEN FELLY RACE. A dozen maiden three-year-old fillies to race six furlongs was the second offering, end it saw Galagal, from the Sage Stable, winner over Citadel, from the Wheatley Stable. The camera was called upon to award third to John Simoncttits Mollie Swain over Gulf Breeze. There was an unusual delay at the post and the start was none too good, with Galagal from the inside stall first to show the way. But she did not last long in the command when she was shuffled back as Citadel was rushed up by Longden and Swing Time, outside of the daughter of Sir Gallahad III., was in a measure to blame for the crowding back of Galagal when she came over as she moved up. WHEATLEY VICTORY. The Wheatley Stable silks were triumphant In the Restigouche, a six-furlong dash for three-year-olds, when Stormscud showed the way throughout to earn a close decision over Mrs. Parker Comings Thanksgiving, the favorite. It was virtually a two-horse race, for they were at all times well out from the others, and when the Paragon Stables Family Friend took third place he was eight lengths back of them. One of the best finishes of the day came out of the sixth race, a mile and seventy yards, that engaged five good older horses. It went to "eland Putnams Moon Side, but he har jtfe all through the stretch to lead ho. . StVheatley Stables Teufel by a head an thereby rob James Fitzsimmons and Johnny Longden of a triple. Far back of the battling pair Pastry easily saved third from Bulwark, while White Hot, the only other starter, had cut no figure in the running. Pastry was so unruly at the post that he was taken to a position outside the stalls.
