THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 TEDDYS COMET Bay co!t, by Teddy Flying Comet; owned by Valdina Farms. Trained by J. J. Flanigan. By NORKIS HOYDEN i. u -- Nothing will be seen of Teddys Comet until the latter part of the season because of ankle trouble, but off his performances of last year the Valdina Farms colt deserves a position among the leading three-year-old prospects. Owner E. P. Woodward and trainer J. J. Flanigan are hopeful that the colts infirmity will disappear during his period of idleness at the formers Texas farm and can stand training for an autumn campaign, which would give him a chance to gain a rating in his division. Teddys Comet was a busy colt last season, racing from the middle of February until the end of October and making seventeen starts, six of which he won. The son of Teddy and Flying Comet, by Peter Pan, was secondhand third four times each, fourth on two occasions and beaten off only once when he had no chance. Some of these efforts were against the best youngsters in the country and brought about a dead-heat with Tiger in the Arlington Futurity and a victory in the Richard Johnson Stakes at Laurel. Sky Larking only defeated him three-fourths of a length in the Bashford Stakes and half a length in a dash of five and one-half furlongs at Arlington Park in the time of 1:05. In the Arlington Futurity, Teddys Comet went head and head with Tiger from the start and was holding his own with the Milky Way speedster at the finish. As a consequence of his excellent race in the Arlington Futurity and his good previous record, the Teddy colt was assigned 126 pounds for the Eastern Shore Handicap, but he did not get away well in the field of nineteen, and with so many horses in his way could not reach a contending position. Only eight opposed Teddys Comet in the Richard Johnson Stakes, and he was able to run his race, being rated off the early pace" and -sent forward through the stretch to win going away by a length over Nedayr, which went on from that engagement to capture the Walden Handicap and Fimlico Futurity. The Valdina colt had 122 pound3 on his back to 110 for Nedayr. For the Jenkins Handicap, Teddys Comet was assigned 124 pounds, but he probably could have handled the impost successfully but the luck was against him. Breaking none too smartly from an outside position, he lost considerable ground as he was hustled forward to reach a contending position on the first turn. After being rated to the stretch, he went to the front when called upon but was permitted to go down towards the rail where the going was none too good, and he weakened to permit Sun Alexandria, Legal Light and Chaps to overtake him in the final stages. Nevertheless, he was beaten less than two lengths. Under smoother handling all the way, he probably would have asserted his superiority. Teddys Comet was trained early for the Santa Anita Derby, but suffered the injury which only recently brought about the decision of his owner and trainer to turn him out in the hope that nature would clean up the trouble. A colt of excellent type and ample size, he was finely bred, Teddy having gotten Sir Gallahad III., Bull Dog, Sun Teddy and many good horses in his native France. Flying Comet, dam of Teddys Comet, was by the highly successful Peter Pan, from Starflight, the sister of North Star III., which also produced Insco, the sire of Lawrin. He was bred for quality and class and possibly will develop into a stayer. Ormonde fOrme... fFIying Fox J An-chca 1 Vampire TGaloP5n 1 Iron M -I k. fClamart f , . : . - LAmie J Princess Catherine ...
