SEABISCUirS SLOW gallop Fails to Impress Work Watchers in Working a Mile in 1:42. Howard Star Hard Urged Near Finish — No Great Amount of Wagering Recorded on the Match Race. NEW YORK, N Y., May 20.— For the second straight morning today, Tom Smith, trainer of Seabiscuit, had Charles S. Howards representative in the match with War Admiral to be staged at Belmont Park May 30, at the barrier for schooling, thereby convincing the railbirds that he is very anxious to minimize whatever advantage the Samuel D. Riddle star may possess in the starting. As was the case Thursday, Johnny Pollard, who will be adorned in the red and white Howard silks on Memorial Day, permitted the five-year-old son of Hard Tack and Swing On, by Whisk Broom II. to lunge through the Bahr starting gate several times before making any attempt to quiet him down. Once Pollard was ready to steady Sea-biscuit, the horse responded readily and after standing quietly for a few moments he was sent away. Thursday morning the California hope was pulled up after a furlong, but Pollard sent him on about his business today and the Hard Tack veteran worked a mile, for which he was timed in 1:42. He was under urging all the way and trainer Smith, who after supervising the horses barrier schooling, quickly galloped back to stand on his familiar pony to time his star protege. Before going to the barrier, where he was equipped with blinkers, Seabiscuit galloped once around the training track as a warm- Continued on thirty-fourth page. Seabiscuit was accompanied by Coramine in breaking away from the post, the filly going with him for five furlongs in 1:03. They went the opening quarter in :24% and the half mile in :49, continuing along the Howard horse went the six furlongs in 1:14% after which Pollard stung him re- peatedly with the whip. Considering Sea- biscuits time and the manner in which he went the last part of the workout dockers were not impressed with his workout. War Admiral also visited the barrier this morning but he was not asked for speed work, having been sent five furlongs the previous day. He stood in the Bahr starting gate for three minutes, acting very quietly which is just the opposite of his post manners with the colors up in the afternoon. Thereafter he galloped slowly around the track and returned to his barn. WAR ADMIRAL IN PADDOCK. Just before the first race, Geo. Conway, trainer of War Admiral, brought the mighty atom to the paddock for his first visit since being saddled for the Belmont Stakes a year ago. The son of Man o War had a saddle on his back and long bandages on all legs. Trailing the stable pony, he leisurely went around the walking ring for about fifteen minutes, during which time a large crowd gathered to inspect him. No great amount of wagering yet has been recorded in the Belmont betting ring and that which has been made so far is largely confined to the professionals. At the present time 13 to 20 is hardly available on War Admiral whereas 7 to 5 is being laid against Seabiscuit. I | j i ! I I , I j j i I I i I | j I I
