RENEWING OLD KINGS PLATE Woodbine Pk. to Open Meeting With Traditional American Feature. Palatial Home of Ontario Jockey Club Repainted and Ready for Inaugural — Sixteen in Headliner. TORONTO, Ont., May 20.— Woodbine Park, palatial home of the Ontario Jockey Club, inaugurates the Canadian season when they open their gates for the first meeting of 1938. The old Lakeside plant is at its best and everything is in readiness to accommodate one of the largest crowds in its history. The running of the historic Kings Plate, the Canadian "Kentucky Derby" has created such an interest this year that all reservations have been taken up for all boxes and indicate a huge crowd. The plant has been entirely repainted and with the spacious flower beds and well kept field, presents a picturesque picture for the opening. The track proper is at its best, the rains of Thursday and early Friday morning failing to change track conditions and fast footing will likely prevail for the running of the classic. Racing secretary R. Shelley has arranged a splendid opening day program with eight well balanced fields. The seventy-ninth running of the Kings Plate with the added value of ,500 and fifty guineas, the gift of his Majesty the King, holds the place of honor. This old event has attracted a field of sixteen of the best three and four-year-olds homebreds of the Province. EXPECT STIRRING CONTEST. Much interest has been created by the various outside wagers made by various owners and a stirring contest is assured. The famous yellow and black silks of the Seagram Stable which have been seen in this event since 1898, will compete again, when Phillip Seagram leased Tab Him for this event from J. C. Fair. He will be coupled with Tab Mark and Troublemork, but will carry the familiar black and yellow sash. Red Pirate, from the Parkwood Stable and coupled with Bucharest, will carry top weight of 132 in the classic. R. W. R. Cowies Aldwych, P. Seagrams Tab Him and Med-way Stables Slycat are next in poundage, each having the allotment of 127. Thirty below, the property of Mrs. R. H. New, another member of the older division and making her first appearance under silks, will carry 122 pounds. Bunty Lawless, pre-race favorite, H. C. Hatchs Suffern and Caracole the Medway Stables Tokay and the Riverdale Stables Wicklow and J. G. Fairs Troublemark each have 117 pounds. Mona Bell, from the Cosgrave Stable, Cabin Gal from the stable of H. Giddings, Bucharest from the Parkwood Stable, Grand Dame from G. M. Hendries Stable and Tab Mark, all filly members of the field will get in under 112 pounds. FRASER MEMORIAL. The Fraser Memorial Steeplechase at two miles and supporting feature, has eight timber-toppers named and most are familiar to local fans. Wilfrid G., winner last year of this old event, which is having its fiftieth running has been allotted 152 pounds. Post time for the first event each day will be two oclock E. D. T., while the "Daily Double" will be held on the first and second events. Kings Plate, ,500 added and fifty guineas, three and four-year-olds, Canadian foaled, one and one-eighth miles. PP. Horse.
