SOUTHWEST AFRICA WILL FIGHT MARITZBURG, South Africa, Nov. 16. Deputy Premier Jan Smuts told the congress of the United Party today that the government would "fight if necessary" to prevent the return of Southwest Africa to Germany. "We are going to defend Southwest Africa to the uttermost," Smuts said in reference to recent proposals for meeting the Reichs colonial demands. "Providence entrusted South Africa with this territory as a sacred trust under League of Nations mandate and if the necessity arose we would fight for Southwest Africa because it is essential to the safety of South Africa."
