t BOWIE TURF NOTES $ Koyal Cross, owned by D. N, Gilpin of Virginia, was turned over to Claude Feltner to train. The George Hoffman horses arrived from New Orleans today. They are Sugaboot, Celtic Legend, Count Me, Rare Gem and Beacon Queen. Rare Gem is a Preakness nominee. At private terms, Mrs. Mose Simon purchased the horses, Venetian, Misled and Ahriman from . H. Nimkoff. The horses will be trained by her husband, Mose. Jockey R. Donoso arrived from Miami and reported to the Short Brook Farm and will ride for that establishment during the meeting. Trainer J. J. Barker reported that Armag-nac came out of his race the opening day lamed. The first horse banished to the schooling list for the new season was B. F. Christmas Lauerman, a starter in the last race on opening day. Trainer C. Hunt reported that he carried nominal insurance on the plater, Repsac, which was destroyed yesterday, the result of a broken shoulder. Greg Johnson, who is taking stall applications for the thirty-six-day meeting at Charles Town, W. Va., reported that 200 applications have been filed for stable room. J. B. Belk, Virginia breeder, reported today that he had signed George Witmer to ride for him during the season. "Buster" Bedwell is making riding engagements for jockeys Shelhamer and V. Polk. The latter is an apprentice. Alms, which was second in the Louisiana Derby, arrived at Laurel with the Millsdale Stable consignment. J. G. Davis vanned seven horses here from Timonium. They are destined for racing at Charles Town during that meeting. "Butch" Joyce deserted Brooklyn for the opening of the eastern season. He reported that everything is in readiness at Jamaica for the opening. Hirsch Jacobs reported that the horses he has in training at Jamaica are fairly well advanced and will be seen under colors during that meeting. He wintered a division at that track. Statistical observers pointed out that Frank Garrett saddled the winner of the first race in 1938 and repeated with Pimlico Queen on the opening day this year. Trainer R. Curran saddled the second winner last season, but missed when his starter, Chief Cherokee, failed in the second dash. John F. Curry, "Izzy" Shapiro and Roger McDermott were among the New York delegation that witnessed the running of the days program from the clubhouse. R. H. "Specs" Crawford was an arrival. He came from California. John Coburri arrived from New York and will stay for several days.
