HISTORIC BACKGROUND OF RANCHO SAN JULIAN JULIANThoroughbreds Thoroughbreds Wow Produced at Vast Cattle Ranch Founded in 1917 Two Stallions Standing StandingSANTA SANTA BARBARA Calif Juno 14 In 1817 was established about forty miles north of this now rather historic and fabulously rich settlement one of the larg ¬ est cattle ranches in the State of Cali ¬ fornia It was known as the If icho Na cional and was stocked with Tithe Cattle tax allotted to the clergy of onetenth of the products of land and stock It was the chief meat supply source for the sol ders of the King of Spain Today it is known as the Rancho San Julian ivided into several large ranches ranchesIn In 1S37 the Spanish Crown granted to Captain Jose de la Guerra y Noreiga Habitilado General of both Californias this vast acreage In 1867 Thomas Blood good Dibblee acquired the property by purchase from Caspar Orena and his wife Maria Antonia de la Cuerra Orena descendant of the original grantee A year later Iibblec married Francisca de la Guerra granddaughter of Jose de la Guer ¬ ra y Noreiga The property today is owned by his heirs and the ranch has therelore r fined in the family familyDibblee Dibblee a native of New York gave up his successful law practice and moved to California His son T Wilson Dibblee is the manager of this vast estate While Thomas Wilson Dibblee devoted his efforts t stock raising T Wilson Dibblee son and heir added the breeding of thoroughbreds to the ranch activities activitiesSEVEN SEVEN 1941 FOALS FOALSRoaming Roaming the spacious pastures of this famous old ranch today are seven foals and five yearlings The 1941 arrivals are sons and daughters rf Cromar a Western Can ¬ adabred stallion by Marcu iolius from Carabosse by Fairy King Gyrene by Cyl lene and Lawson bred like Louis B Mayers s llion I2au Pere both being by Sonin Law and both having Hampton top and bct tm tmThe The five Caromars are colts and the other is a filly Movie Star by Runstar out of Ventura by Puryear D foaled a colt Fon setta by Phusla Playing Cards by Fair Play foaled colt Graceful byi Spanish Prince II out of Minuet by Clambala foaled fiKy fiKyThe The Lawcon foals are from Dona Elsie by High Step Aunt Elsie by Bonnie Joe colt Whirr by Hand Grenade Bunny Burr by Rannymede colt and Queen Carmen by High Step Queen Catherine by Uncle colt All were returned to Lawson a government stallion standing at the Rancho San Julian JulianOf Of the five yearlings at the ranch four are by Lawson and the other is by Caromar Three will be sent to the Santa Anita sales in July a colt by Lawson out of S O S another by Lawson out of Queen Carmen and a filly by Caromar out of the mare Graceful GracefulThey They will be accompanied by three brood mares Patricia Grey II a grey daughter of Stefan the Great and Finntine by The Finn Hasty by Trompe la Morte Hasty Miss by Boots and Saddle Corsage by Wigstone out of Pusky Belle by Olambala OlambalaLawson Lawson like his kinsman Beau Pere is a big horse standing almost seventeen hands He is a robust individual that gets very sturdy foals It is the opinion of T Wilson Dibblee that although Lawson has had few opportunities his yearlings of 1941 and this ears foals mark the beginning of a success ¬ ful xud career
