CALIFORNIA STUDENTS GET BREEDING COURSE COURSEFive Five Thoroughbred Mares Given to School at San Luis Obispo Care and Development Taught TaughtSAN SAN LUIS OBISPO Calif June 14 On the fringe of this historic old town is being developed an educational center known as California State Polytechnic where a course in the breeding care and development of thoroughbreds is part of the curriculum probably the only institution of its kind in America offering it This year between thirty and forty students are taking this course along scientific and practical lines with qualified veterinarians as instructors instructorsCalifornia California State Polytechnic is maintained entirely on revenues from racing as is to a large extent the University of California and an agricultural school at Davis near Sacramento nd California breeders are also taking a genuine interest in the local enter ¬ prise priseWith With the assistance of John Knezevich of Hollywood Park five California breeders last year donated five brood mares four of which foaled this spring Bing Crosby gave Bon Eva a daughter of Bon Homme which has a beautiful colt by Naishapur and which was being bred to Mrs Vanderbilt Phelps Cynic Walter H Hoffman Jr contributed a bay mare named Lonestar Miss by Gnome whose High Step foal died ione star Miss has been bred to C S Howards Son o Battle BattleMARE MARE BY GALLANT FOX FOXWalter Walter T Wells recently elected presi ¬ dent of the California Breeders Association gave his mare Fascile daughter of Gallant Fox which delivered a foal by By Pass II owned by Mrs James Ralph III and who this year was bred to War Glory Charles E Perkins donated the mare Vibrant daugh ¬ ter of Light Brigade which has a colt by Carleton F Burkes Soon Over and which was again bred to the son of Buchai and Fleeting Dawn by Hurry On Soon Over imported to this country by the Greentree Farm is now standing at Carleton Burkes Greenfield Farm near Camarillo Charles E Cooper added the Bistouri mare Shasta Red who has been bred to Bon Homme HommeNot Not only have these California breeders donated mares and the free services of their stallions consisting of Cooper owner of the famous San Luis Rey Ranch Perkins whose Alisal Ranch north of Santa Barbara has been one of the most successful enterprises of its kind in California for years and where the famous Flying Ebony still stands and Henry Potter Russell former member of the California Horse Racing Board past presi ¬ dent of the California Breeders Association which operates the Double H Ranch in the Carmel Valley One of the duties of the board is to deliberate on the most desirable crosses and to arrange matings for the mares maresRecently Recently it was stated on good authority that by next spring even the services of Sea biscuit owned by Charles S Howard and the famous Beau Pere imported by Louis B Mayer may be available availableSCENE SCENE LIKE BREEDING FARM FARMIn In order to carry on the course in sur ¬ roundings similar to those existing at any well managed breeding farm a new barn has been erected at Polytechnic It is of sub ¬ stantial construction and contains six stalls each 16 by 16 feet in addition to a modern stud barn barnSix Six paddocks have been set aside with heavy fence posts sunk in concrete and gates and hinges that should last for years The paddocks well irrigated will also be used for the growing of feed such experiments be ¬ ing part of the course courseWhile While the school usually requires the more youthful students who enroll for the general animal husbandry course including the special thoroughbred curriculum to possess older students who did not graduate from high schools but who have some practical experience and desire to broaden their knowledge are eligible for enrollment enrollmentThese These future stock breeders particularly those taking the general course are per ¬ mitted to buy their own livestock Avith money loaned by the school at low rates of interest and by developing the stock earn sufficient money to pay their tuition This does not apply to those taking the thorough ¬ bred course only for the thoroughbred col ¬ ony has not yet expanded to that state Some day it is hoped the thoroughbred experiment at Polytechnic will have ad vanied to a stage where a course in train ¬ ing horses for racing purposes will also bo added r
