CHALLEDON May start in inAmerican American Handicap at atHollywood Hollywood Park REFLECTIONS By CHALLENGER Challedon May Start July Fourth Brann to Sell Yearlings at Spa irom six to ten eacn season at Saratoga The Branns plan to leave California imme ¬ diately after the running of the Hollywood Gold Cup spend a few days at the farm in Maryland then proceed to Saratoga for the season Mrs Brann is high in her praise of Whirlaway and only smiled when re ¬ minded that a fall match with Challedon would be the natural of the season He may not win the Hollywood Gold Cup btit there is no more impressive looking horse in the state of California than Meissen the invader from Peru and from all accounts the South American champion He stands slight ¬ ly over seventeen hands and for his size one of the most perfectly pro ¬ portioned horses we have ever seen He bulks around 1300 pounds and is obviously a racer of tremendous driving power The invader is at Charles E Coopers Rancho San Luis Rey and will be given his preliminary trainin at that picturesque California estab ¬ lishment Whether he can be brought to his peak for the Cold Cup is a question in this writers mind To us he is a racer which will require plenty of work and with only a month to go his handlers face a herculean task If they succeed Meissen will be a real color starter in the Gold Cup Other imported horses will be pointed for the 75000 event but none of them have the record of this invader which is credited with winning fifteen of his nineteen starts in South America In this country he will be raced in the silks of A T Jergins of Long Beach Another Kayak II some say and all Meissen has to do is to prove it itAnother Another powerful stable that will jour ¬ ney East is that of W E Boeing well known Califbrnian Their objective is Ar ¬ lington Park in Chicago and then on to Meissen Impressive Looking Horse Pony Express Points for Futurity HOLLYWOOD Calif June 14 14Challedons Challedons objective is the Hollywood Gold Cup but if all goes well the Brann champion may start in the 20000 added American Handicap on July 4 The writer sat with Messrs Brann and Whitehill as they discussed the champions probable campaign He is really coming along fine Whitehill told us and barring the unforeseen will be fit and ready for The Gold Cup in fact he will be ready long before that To date I have given him long gallops The general impression is that Challedon needs a couple of races before he shows at his best but take my word he will be fit for his top race when we send him out W L Brann informed us he will send a group of yearlings to the Saratoga Sales in August and will be a regular consignor in the seasons to follow I will retain enough for my own racing string and plan to offer Saratoga Springs for the August season seasonBoeing Boeing has nominated three for the Arlington Lassie Stakes on Saturday July 5 and no less than six for tthe Arlington Futurity to be run Saturday July 12 One of the latter group is Put In a colt by Stimulus Cash Book who won the first race at Hollywood Park on Friday The juvenile hope of the stable however is Pony Express a boy colt by Pharamond II La Chica and which cost Boeing 15000 at the Spa sales last August This royallybred youngster will be pointed for the Arlington Futurity but if he cannot be readied in time will be reserved for important juvenile events later in the season Still another important stable to campaign at Arlington Park is Valdina Farm the Texas establishment of E F Woodward Valdina has named six for the Arlington Lassie five for the Futurity and the trio of Valdina Dude Valdina Groom and Valdina Paul for the 40000 Classic to be run on Saturday July 26 Louis B Mayer has named Blue Pennant for the Futurity and Orange River a bay colt by Fairway Organdie for the Classic Hollywood Park has a special appropriation of 25000 to be awarded trainers and grooms At Arlington Park in Chicago which opens Monday June 23 they will stage the richest prize contest open to jockeys on the American turf The beautiful Chicago plant will be the scene of a 3500 distribution in awards for the best showing at the thirtyfour day meeting the sum to be equally divided between them The same contest will be staged at Washington Park making a total of 7000 for the jockeys at the two meetings There will be two separate contests at Arlington one covering the first seventeen days of the meeting and the other beginning July 12 to cover the last half They will distinguish between fullfledged riders and apprentices A sum of 500 will go to the jockey and apprentice rider scoring the largest number of points Five points for a first two for a second and one for a third The runnerup in each division will receive 250 and the third rider 125 At Arlington they also provide a blanket insurance policy that covers every rider in every race The jockey room at the Chicago course provides many comforts and conveniences for the saddle lads and every possible aid is given the apprentice riders to advance in their pro ¬ fession This coming weekend will be an important one in the events to be run At Aqueduct they will stage both the 10000 added Dwyer for threeyearolds at one and onequarter miles and the 5000 added Tremont for twoyearold colts and geldings at five and a half furlongs Delaware Park has slated the 10000 added Sussex Handi ¬ cap for threeyearolds and older horses and at Suffolk the Betsy Ross for twoyear old fillies at five furlongs is listed California fans will witness the 10000 Inglewood Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses at one and onesixteenth miles Lincoln Fields will end a successful meeting this Saturday and on Monday the twentythird Arlington Park will open
