WHIRLAWAY LIKELY TO KEEP DWYER ENGAGEMENT CALUMET ACE EXPECTED TO DEFEND HIS LAURELS LAURELSWill Will Have to Carry 126 Pounds in Aqueduct7 s Saturday Stake Tremont Also on WeekEnd Card CardNEW NEW YORK N Y June 14 Aqueducts summer meeting of twentyone days enters its second week Monday with all indications pointing to a continuation of liberal public response to the Queens County Jockey Clubs offerings The sixday span just ahead will be climaxed on Saturday with a double stake program headed by the Dwyer and the Tre ¬ mont Whirlaway hero of the Triple Crown is a distinct standout among the probables for the mile and a quarter of the Dwyer and present indications are that Warren Wrights stretchrunning colt will defend his championship of the seasons threeyearolds in that 10000 added fixture The little red horse is the best boxoffice attraction in training and of course would be a prohibi ¬ tive favorite even though under the condi ¬ tions of the Dwyer he carries top weight of 126 pounds and must concede from four to ten pounds to any who oppose him himVery Very few horsemen care to send their charges after the redoubtable son of Blen ¬ heim II and at this writing it appears that his foes must come from among Fred Byers Robert Morris Glen Riddle Farms Lord Kitchener Mrs Louise Palladinos Little Beans Ogden Phipps King Cole and Sam Tufanos Market Wise Whirlaway has beaten each of these this season with the exception of Lord Kitchener The latter never has started against Plain Ben Jones charge but in his latest essay was beaten off by King Cole in the Shevlin ACHIEVEMENT OF LITTLE BEANS BEANSOne One of the group Little Beans has soundly whipped Whirlaway this year in a sprint at Tropical Park He left the Calu ¬ met colt with no excuse that day for they were headandhead leaving the gate and again at the turn for home homeThe The Tremont which is the companion fea ¬ ture of the Saturday program with the Dwyer is one of New Yorks most histor ¬ ically significant twoyearold specials This year it will have 5000 added and is to be run at five and onehalf furlongs Ninety five were nominated last April 15 Heading these are a couple more from the Calumet barn Sun Again and Some Chance Sun Again is generally rated the keenest two yearold to have shown so far in the season and at Belmont Park won the Juvenile in new track record time for five furlongs over the Juvenile Course His stablemate Some Chance was second to him on that occa ¬ sion then came back to capture the Na ¬ tional Stallion in the absence of Sun Again AgainMaybe Maybe the Wright horses will double in the Dwyer and Tremont as they did in the Belmont and National Stallion on getaway day at that track before they entrain for Arlington Park ParkThough Though Sun Again shapes up just about as solid a chance in the Tremont as his threeyearold stable companion in the Dwyer there are some other capable new covers eligible for the Saturday renewal of the stake which is restricted to colts and geldings of the division divisionTREMONT TREMONT POSSIBILITY POSSIBILITYBreymann Breymann Farms Brabant runnerup to Incoming in a race over a sloppy track in time that was just a fifth of a second behind the Aqueduct fiveeighths record is a Tre ¬ mont possibility The same goes for Cold streams Albatross Col Maxwell Howards Party Buster Howe Stables Cassis Mrs E G Lewis Rodney Ben Whitakers Re ¬ quested and Jock Whitneys Buster BusterGlen Glen Riddles Soldier Song and Bill Zieg lers Exceptional who are rated among the very best colts uncovered thus far in the young New York turf season are candidates for the Tremont but it is reported by their connections that theyll run very sparingly if at all before the Saratoga meeting In addition Soldier Song cut himself about a stifle in an encounter with a hedge when pulling up after his Belmont Park victory victoryAqueducts Aqueducts new plant seating some 14000 will be taxed to capacity at the end of the week if Whirlaway goes in the Dwyer as now is expected and the association gets a break in overhead conditions conditionsThe The stable fortunate enough to provide the winner of the Brooklyn one week from Sat ¬ urday will head all others at the meeting in point of money won While Ben Jones the leading trainer thus far this year both in point of the amount won by his charges and the number of races won is busy at this ses ¬ sion So is Conn McCreary who is topping the jockey ranks since the first of the year JACK yearJACK SHELLY IN SPOTLIGHT SPOTLIGHTBut But McCreary Robertson Arcaro and Meade are finding little Jack Skelly hard to beat for the title at this meeting Skelly came here unheralded this spring and the Illinois youngster js getting some live mounts and making the most of them themThe The Dwyer outstanding stake of the week anywhere in the country was inaugurated in 1918 In its most memorable running in 1920 it brought to the post just Man o War and John P Grier who staged a tremendous headandhead duel to the x furlong post where Clarence Kummer burned Big Red with his stick and the Riddle horse came away from John P Grier to win by a patch of daylightAnother daylight Another notable Dwyer was that of 1939 in which W L Brann gave jockey George Seabo orders to beat Johnstown at the lat ters own game and essay to take the park away from him leaving the gate After a hectic first half mile Challedon trailed off and Johnstown sauntered home in the excel ¬ lent time of 148 for the nine furlongs furlongsThe The Dwyer was stretched out to the popu ¬ lar mile and onequarter distance last year
