LINCOLN HANDICAP TOPS FINAL WEEKS PROGRAM PROGRAMMile Mile and Quarter Stake Event Features Closing Day at Crete Climax of Distance Attractions AttractionsCRETE CRETE 111 June 14 The fifth and final week of the thirtyday meeting of the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club opening Monday will be climaxed Saturday by the fourteenth running of the 5000 added Lincoln Handi ¬ cap Intense interest is being displayed in that mile and a quarter test because it is the third and final chapter of the distance championship series which annually features the stakes program at this American Turf Association course courseThis This series designed to test the route per ¬ formers at various distances brought them together first in the mile and a sixteenth Francis S Peabody Memorial Handicap then at a mile and threesixteenths in the La Salle Handicap today and finally subjects them to a most exacting test over a mile and a quarter in the Lincoln Handicap HandicapAnnually Annually that event is one of the outstand ¬ ing races in the Middle West Several other stakes are more valuable but few have been marked in the past by any better racing The Lincoln was inaugurated in 1926 when it was won by Supremus Other crack handi ¬ cap performers who have won this stake are Chance Play in 1927 Toro in 1928 Sun Beau in 1931 Mucho Gusto in 1936 and 1939 and Sweeping Light in 1935 Shot Put who went on to recognition as the distance cham ¬ pion of last year won the 1940 running The race was not run in 1932 and 1934 and was raced at a mile and a sixteenth from 1933 to 1939 but was changed back to a mile and a quarter last year yearPROBABLE PROBABLE STARTERS STARTERSAmong Among those horses in top condition for such a race as the Lincoln and expected to be in the starting field Saturday are Junius W Bells Steel Heels Mrs Emil Denemarks Idle Sun and War Minstrel Mrs Marie Evans Shot Put French Lick Springs Sta ¬ bles Yale o Nine Rodney C Groffs Forever Prince Huntley Shers Dog House W C Stroubes Sirasia Valdina Farms Viscounty and Howard Wells Equifox EquifoxSteel Steel Heels was expected to be shipped in from Louisville for the La Salle Handicap but it was decided to wait until next week when the entire stable would be transferred to Arlington Park The fiveyearold son of Harry Baker Heels probably will be vanned over from the North Side course to fill his engagement engagementShot Shot Put is definitely scheduled to defend the laurels won in this race last year when he whipped Yale o Nine and Mucho Gusto In accomplishing his score in the Lincoln the gelded son of Chance Shot carried 112 pounds and stepped the distance in 208 208While 208s s While Yale o Nine who finished second to Shot Put in 1940 has been mostly in sprint events this year it wouldnt take much to fit him for such an engagement as the Lin ¬ coln The Peter Hastings gelding is sharp enough and as he has turned in good races in route events in the past his stable may elect to send him after Saturdays feature featureSTRONG STRONG TRIO TRIOValdinas Valdinas Viscounty Stroubes Sirasia and Wells Equifox are three handicap perform ¬ ers who are ready for just the sort of test this mile and a quarter race offers Vis county won the Francis S Peabody Memo ¬ rial while Equifox accounted for two straight races here before the La Salle Sirasia has recently returned to racing after being rested following a Florida campaign and is ap ¬ proaching his best form formForever Forever Prince and Dog House are two other probable starters who ha e been dis ¬ playing good form of late While the Dene mark stable has nominated Upstream Blind Eagle Colorado Ore Idle Sun and War Min ¬ strel trainer Dave Womeldorf f probably will choose either Idle Sun or War Minstrel or both to represent the stable While the mile and a quarter may be a bit longer than War Minstrel would want to go Idle Sun won Ian allowance race at a mile over a slow track here last week and is ready for a race like the Lincoln
