BOLA FARMS MAJOR MASSACHUSETTS VENTURE YOUNG MASTERS HAVE BIG THINGS PLANNED PLANNEDProperty Property Near Byfield Was Once Famous Trotting Horse Nursery Owned by Bostwick and Lacey LaceyBYFIELD BYFIELD Mass June 14 Out in the lit ¬ tle town of Byfield is what was once known as Fatherland Farm two or three decades ago one of New Englands foremost trotting horse nurseries Two young business men who have become interested in the thorough ¬ bred since the advent of parimutuel bet ¬ ting hereabouts have taken over the old estate They are now laying the foundation for what they hope will prove a successful breeding establishment establishmentThe The newcomers in the breeding and racing ranks are Harold P Bostwick of Winchester Mass and W F Lacey of neighboring Med ford They have rechristened the place Bola Farms deriving the name from the first two letters of their surnames They hope eventually to race a stable composed entirely of thoroughbreds of their own breeding For the immediate future they have been quietly getting together a string of a dozen head now in training at Suffolk Downs DownsThey They have been doing fairly well too in racing In the fifteen races in which their colors of red and white have been seen at Suffolk Downs Bola Farm has been in the money ten times It won five races racesBefore Before purchasing the farm of 300 acres its beautiful mansion house and its barns with box stalls for forty head the new own ¬ ers cast about for a capable superintendent They finally engaged Johnnie McDowell then training for Nat Palumbo another Bay Stater That the choice was a good one sub ¬ sequent events have proved McDowell in addition to doing all the training of the rac ¬ ing division lives on the farm and is de ¬ voting his attention to the brood stock there and the complete rehabilitation of the acre GRANDACE FOUNDATION SIRE SIREFor For the farms foundation thoroughbred stock Bostwick and Lacey bought the im ¬ ported stallion Grandace sire of good win ners in spite of his limited opportunities on this side They included among others Louis B Mayers great steeplechaser Ossabaw With Grandace was purchased a band of brood mares also from the farm of Mrs Moses Taylor of Newport R I and five weanlings now yearlings yearlingsThe The matrons at Bola Farm are Busylike a daughter of Busy American and Estelle the latter a daughter of Delhi Black Bess a daughter of Jock from the King James mare Agnes Ayres Dim Flame by Dimmesdale and Gasoline by Le Melior Naughty Curl a daughter of Desperate Desmond and the Broomstick mare Broomhandle and Tesor Mia by Swift and Sure and Thekla by Way good The other mares are the sisters Mick Lady and Techi Lady both daughters of Michigan Boy and Eves Pal by Best Pal The seven mares visited the court of Grand ¬ ace this season seasonThere There are four foals at Bola Farm at pres ¬ ent Three of these are by Grandace The other is by the University of New Hampshire stallion Sun God II IIOf Of the three hundred acres onehalf is in pasture affording plenty of excellent grazing for brood mares and the younger stock The remaining 150 acres are under cultivation it being the intention of the new owners to raise so far as is possible the hay corn and oats to cariy the stock through the win ¬ ter Last winter all of the stalls not used by the stock were given over to boarders and virtually all of those not required for the coming winter have already been engaged Bola Farm has proved one of the outstand ¬ ing wintering places in New England Eventually EnglandEventually it is expected that Bola Farm situated on the famous Newburyport Pike gateway to Maines Vacationland and the Canadian Provinces will become a show place as well as the birthplace of many win
