SIRES and DAMS By Nelson Dunstan Hancock Night at Keeneland Sell Claiborne Yearlings Aug. 1 Blenheim II. and Sir Gallahad III. Johnstown Yearlings Appeal NEW YORK, N. Y., June 28. Arthur B. Hancock, master of Claiborne Stud in Kentucky and Ellerslie Stud in Virginia and the acknowledged leading breeder of thoroughbreds in the world today, will offer 56 yearlings at Keeneland on Tuesday night, August 1. Many of these babes will be offered in partnership with other breeders, but even so, all are of the quality that years of experience, plus care and skill could put into them. When a Hancock consignment is released, the reviewer naturally looks to see how many by Blenheim H, Sir Gallahad m., Stimulus, and other successful stallions are included. It does not end there, however, for Johnstown, Rhodes Scholar, Tintagel, Pompey, Flares, Sweeping Light, Menow, Gallant Fox, Omaha, Boswell, Sun Teddy, Snark and Sickle are also listed as sires who are represented. Blenheim n. and Sir Gallahad in. are two of the most remarkable stallions ever brought to these shores, in fact, the entire thoroughbred picture of this country would have to be rewritten were it not for their activities at Claiborne Stud. Like the celebrated Teddy, Blenheim II. was a proven success before importation to this country. As a race horse he was the winner of the Epsom Derby and when sent to stud, sired the Derby winner Mahmoud; Donatello, who sold for 45,000 pounds; Drap dOr, winner of the French Two Thousand Guineas, and Blue Bear, winner of the French One Thousand Guineas. In his first crop in this country was the mighty Whirlaway and to date we must include such winners as Thumbs Up, Mar-Kell, Ocean Wave, Ficklebush, The Swallow, Proud One and ever so many others. In this years crop to be offered at Keeneland are three colts a brown colt by Blenheim II. Galagold; by Sir Gallahad ni.; chestnut colt by Blenheim n. Triumph II. by Stefan the Great and a bay colt by Blenheim II. Gotoit by Mad Hatter. Any colt or filly by this great son of Blandford is certain to attract a fulsome share of attention when offered for sale and we daresay this trio by will be keenly observed by those who are in Kentucky in search of racing material for the 1945 season. This will be especially true regarding the colt of Galagold by Sir Gallahad m., for this sires daughters have proven to be exceptional producers with such as Boswell, Pasteurized, Challedon, Johnstown, Sky Larking, and other champions to their credit. There is a question whether Leamington or Sir Gallahad III. was the most successful stallion ever imported in this country. There is glory for both, but more interest in Sir Gallahad in. for the reason that he has been the leading sire of money winners four times and once second, during the past 15 years. Just one remarkable item in the Hancock sale is that three generations of one male line are represented in Sir Gallahad III., Gallant Fox, and Omaha. Of the three Sir Gallahad III. is by far the most popular and there will be plenty of interest in the five yearlings two colts, three fillies who will represent him at the Keeneland sales on the night of August 1. The two colts are a bay by Sir Gallahad III. out of Dustsweep by Chance Shot and a bay colt by Sir Gallahad III. out of Fleam. Of the two, the Dustsweep colt will attract his share of lookers for the second dam is Dustwhirl by f Sweep, who,, besides being a half-sister to Osmand, is the daughter of Whirlaway. The third dam was Ormanda by Superman, who produced that fleet racer Brevity. The three Sir Gallahad III., fillies to be offered are a bay out of Briarside by Sun Briar; a bay out of Firetop by Man o War, andu bay out of Sun Gamonia by Sun Briar. Firetop is the dam of the fleet Columbiana, winner of the Widener Challenge Cup and the dam of Ocean Wave and Red Vulcan. Stimulus has .been very much in the limelight in recent years and with good reason. This son of Ultimus had sons and daughters who won more races in 1933-34-35 and 1936 than the get of any other stal- lion. Last year a son of Blenheim II. Risk, by Sir Gallahad HI., brought 6,000 and this juvenile is known as Pericles. In the coming sale there, will be a bay filly by Stimulus out of Risk, but even this half-sister to Pericles, Sky Larking and others will not be the only offering by this famous stallion in the Hancock sale. There will also be a chestnut filly by Stimulus out of My Bonnie, a daughter of Gallant Fox. While the sons and daughters of Blenheim n., Sir Gallahad in. and Stimulus will be the backbone of the Claiborne-EUerslie sales, many of the bidders are certain to be interested in the youngsters by Johnstown and Rhodes Scholar, two of the younger stallions who are now serving with those older and more famous at the Paris farm. Johnstown is the sire of Fleettown, who, to date, is regarded as one of the most promising juveniles of the season. More regarding these two youngster stallions will be carried in an article at a later date.
