Stars and Stripes May Draw Twelve Possibility That Pensive May Accompany Sun Again To Post in Holiday Stake HOMEWOOD, 111., June 28 The probability that Howard Wells seven-year-ojd Equifox will be a powerful contender for the 0,000 Stars and Stripes Handicap to be run at Washington Park next Tuesday was seen by the manner in which he won the mile feature of Tuesdays card at the Homewood track. The son of Equipoise came from a long way back to get the decision after running the eight furlongs in 1:36, one of the fastest performances of the year at the distance. Equifox achieved his latest victory under 115 pounds which is 13 more than he will have to carry over the mile and a furlong of the Stars and Stripes. He won from a field that included Mrs. Robert McGarveys Night Shadow, Miss Ethel Hills War Knight, Lt. Com. William Montgomerys Choppy Sea and the Brolite Farms Challenge Me, all of whom also are eligible for the outstanding feature of Charity Week at Washington Park. As the Stars and Stripes Handicap begins to shape up it appears likely that about 12 horses will compete for the big end of the 0,000 purse. Equifox Certain to Start Following their contest on Tuesday, Equifox, Night Shadow and War Knight seem certain starters while others considered sure to take part barring the unforeseen are Calumet Farms Sun Again and possibly Pensive, Allen Drumhellers Georgie Drum, William G. Helis Rounders, George J. Stemples Put In, A. J. Sacketts Tola Rose and H. P. Headleys Anticlimax. The possibility that Pensive will be among the contestants lends additional color to the Stars and Stripes in that with both him and Sun Again in the line-up the race will bring out the leading contenders for the championships of two divisions. In the light of his brilliant form this season, Sun Again is the current king of the handicap division and Pensive, by virtue of his triumphs in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, has the best claim to the seasons three-year-old title. Whether Pensive will take part in the Stars and Stripes as an entry mate with Sun Again will remain for a later decision by the Calumet forces. Charity Week, which begins next Monday, will give patrons the opportunity to see nearly every good horse on the grounds under colors. The Stars and Stripes is the principal feature, but important, too, is the Skokie Handicap which will be staged on Tuesday, July 6. This event is a 0,000 contest at seven furlongs for three-year-olds and in it are expected to be a number of candidates for both the Arlington Classic and the American Derby. Nominations for the Skokie are to be announced tomorrow. Next Mondays card will be headlined by the Top Flight Purse in which three-year-old fillies will be asked to compete at one mile. There will be nine races . on both the Monday and Tuesday cards next week.
