Monmouth Park Rolls Up Inaugural Curtain Today First Flight Tops Eleven Fillies Seeking Colleen Stakes Honors MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 18. Following a lapse of 53 years, thoroughbred racing will make a triumphant return to Monmouth Park tomorrow when the Monmouth Jockey Club rolls up the curtain on a 28-day inaugural meeting at 2 p. m. The opening day program is hansomely patronized by the leading racing establishments in the East with 11 smart two-year-old fillies, representing some of the countrys most notable proponents of the turf, having been drawn for the five and one-half furlongs of the Colleen Stakes, which will feature the inaugural program. ! Expected to enjoy the bulk of support from the anticipated opening day throng of 0,000 or more, is C. V. Whitneys First Flight, best of the two-year-old fillies to show thus far this season. First Flight will run coupled with a stablemate Bright Song, and the entry shapes up a staunch favorite despite the quality of the remainder of the Colleen field. The supporting feature, the six furlongs Iroquois Purse for four-year-olds and upward, also was heavily patronized, prompting racing secretary John P. Turner Jr. to card it in two divisions. Under the conditions of the Coleen Stakes, First Flight will carry 119 pounds while Bright Song will take up 112. Mesl appears comfortably rigged under 116 pounds and will enjoy the riding services of the capable Sammy Walters, who accompanied the filly from Delaware Park. Pipette, who will flaunt the familiar silks of W. H. Laboyteaux, is a homebred daughter of Piping Highclere, and as racing returns to northern New Jersey for the first time since 1893, it would provide immense satisfaction, should Pipette, foaled within 10 miles of the new Monmouth course, win the inaugural feature. In addition to being a sentimental choice, Pipette has fully qualified as one of the leaders of her division, having won two of her last three starts in New York. Although the huge plant has not been brought to a stage of detailed completion, opening-day fans are assured of witnessing the sport under comfortable conditions. There is ample parking space for the thousands who will motor to the course and it is only a very short walk from the new Monmouth Park railroad station to the admission gates. Several railroad specials will make regular stops at Monmouth station. The huge wagering plant is in complete readiness and will be manned by a veteran crew under the direction of Mort Mahony. The popular Daily Double, form of wagering will be computed on the first and second races and Double windows will close promptly at 1:45 p. m. The track, which has been pronounced by veteran horsemen as one of the finest in the country, was lightning fast today.
