Poll HBPA Vice-Presidents On Coming Convention Date SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 18. Following the election in Chicago of Lawrence Thompson as vice-president of the central division, Leo ODonnell, national president of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association, instructed John McDowell, national secretary of that organization, to wire the heads of the various divisions today for their approval on dates for the national convention of that organization. Tentative date for the convention, which will be held in Boston this year, is June 28. This convention will be particularly important and of interest in racing circles this year because the HBPA, which now has a membership of more than 4,000, comprises approximately 70 per cent of those racing horses today. Many subjects of primary important to racing are on the agenda for discussion during the convention. Those who were contacted by wire by McDowell, in addition to Thompson, included Frank Kearns, New York division; Frank Grand, southern division; James Chesney, Michigan-Ohio; Dan Chappell, legal adviser, and Judge Joseph A. Murphy, adviser to the president. In addition, McDowell was also instructed to contact Arthur Gaignard and Pat Catalano, the two New England district vice-presidents, for their votes on the matter.
