Oatmeal Closes Fast to Gain Victory Crack Time Gives j Way in Run Home Jessops Strong Hand Ride Aboard Bieber Racer Factor In Score; Proof Coil Third i AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 18. Isa-dore Biebers highly erratic veteran, Oatmeal, responded courageously to Job Dean Jessops handling and won the featured Howard Beach Handicap at Aqueduct today by a neck from J. M. Jerkens Crack Time, who led Vera S. Braggs Proof Coil a similar margin at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. Havahome Stables Omamax was a distant fourth before Noview and Chaldon Heath, who completed the field. Of this pair, Noview had speed and Chaldon Heath appeared to suffer from a bad case of boredom. Oatmeal was fairly well supported by the crowd of 20,888 who turned out in threatening weather that became spectacular in the middle of the afternoon, when the skies opened to the accompaniment of tiresome sounds of thunder and vivid streaks of lightning, sending the exposed patrons in a mad rush for shelter. The son of Cameronian paid .20 and ran the distance in 1:49, which is about par for the course at this meeting, regardless of track conditions. Actually, the strip is probably a little faster when thoroughly drenched than under normal conditions. Golden Man In Under 102 Pounds I Frank Kenney sent Crack Time to the front at the start of the Howard Beach, which was affected directly before the stands, and quickly opened up a length or so lead on Proof Coil, who was followed remotely by Noview, Chaldon Heath, Oatmeal and Omamax. As the field rounded the clubhouse turn into the backstretch, Crack Time continued to lead Proof Coil, while Oatmeal moved into third place, and Chaldon Heath dropped out of contention. Jessop really sat down to ride as they rounded the stretch bend, and Oatmeal quickly moved up on Crack Time and Proof Coil, with the latter being in rather close quarters between them. The winner outlasted his rivals under a strong hand ride. This was the first time Jessop had been aboard the temperamental Oatmeal, and it gave him an opportunity to show once more what he can do with sulky horses, who seem to be willing to run for him after pinning their ears back and digging in their toes when ridden by other equally celebrated riders.
