Danada Red Drives Hard To Win Ultimatum Purse Staves Off Bold Stretch Bid of Risky Hash at Arlington Park ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 21. Mrs. Ada L. Rices Danada Red, a consistent colt who had been showing especially promising form in his recent New York performances, turned in a stirring effort under an energetic ride by the star relnsman Basil James to capture the Ultimatum Purse, seven furlongs sprint that highlighted this afternoons sport. E. Wortmans Risky Hash, a filly who has been competing against the lesser lights that race at Fairmount Park, showed a surprisingly clever test to finish second, while the Calumet Farms good three-year-old In Earnest, who was attempting a comeback after petering out in the Kentucky Derby prep, showed a fairly even performance to take the show award. Competing over a holding, heavy track, Danada Red finished three-quarters of a length to the good and chalked up 1:29 for the distance. He was forced to concede weight to all of his five rivals, but he handled his 122 pounds assignment nicely throughout the running. In view of Danada Reds smart races in the Empire State it was puzzling to note that the gathering of 13,000 established In Earnest the favorite. An older, well seasoned colt, the Rice speedster appeared to have everything in his favor, but local turfites often overlook the form sheet whenever the Calumet silks appear on the track. From start to finish the ultimatum produced a keen contest, and the only horse who did not figure in the running was Mrs. Emil Denemarks Fire Dust. Alison Peters,, always a flash out of the gate, sped to the front at the beginning, but couldnt pull away and before the field had negotiated a quarter of a mile he was ready to-call it a day. In Earnest then moved into a short Continued on Page Thirty Danada Red Drives Hard To Win Ultimatum Purse Staves Off Bold Stretch Bid of Risky Hash at Arlington Park Continued from Page One lead but was joined almost immediately by Merrymarch and Danada Red. In Earnest continued to hold a slight advantage going into the turn, but Dodson had him in the tough going on the rail and couldnt get out, unless he risked the loss of several lengths by pulling up and taking to the overlane route. Danada Red, on the outside and picking the best footing, moved into the lead at the head of the stretch, but couldnt draw clear of In Earnest and Marrymarch. The latter was still very much in the fight nearing the eighth pole when he became sandwiched in between the other two and Adams was forced to snatch up quickly to prevent the gelding from going down. Risky Hash in the meantime had been held off the sharp early pace. He stumbled slightly at the break and didnt find his stride until well into the stretch. During the late stages he came with a fine burst of speed and it wasonly James alertness that kept him from stealing the race with his unexpected burst. The opening two races produced con-j siderable excitement for those who like to see mutuels of the box car variety on the board when Mrs. Emil Denemarks Bright Stage registered in the initial offering and
