Propose to Photograph Races From Helicopter Lou Smith, Rockingham General Manager, Is Toying With Idea BOSTON, Mass., June 21. Lou Smith, who pioneered New England racing and has come up with several original ideas in the conduct of the sport which have been copied to advantage by other sections of the country, has been conducting some interesting experiments at the Salem, N. H., track, during the past few days. The Rockingham Park general manager has been testing an idea of his to have a photographer film the running of the races from a helicopter while flying over the field during an actual race. After several preliminary f lighters over horses during workout hours revealed that the presence of the flying machine overhead did not scare them, the idea, was put to a real test yesterday. Two van loads of horses, owned by Sam Garfield, T. P. Morgan and others, went to Rockingham Park early yesterday morning. Willie Turnbull, Buddy Connolly and other jockeys went along to participate in the tests. Four or five actual races were put on and the boys instructed to ride as roughly as they dared. The photographer went up in the plane, filmed the races, the pilot landed his plane in the Rockingham cen-terfield and the films were developed on the spot. During the course of the experiments, Smith himself went up in the plane and followed a race from his seat. He was more than pleased with the birdseye view of the action his moving perch afforded him. Just what the final disposition of the idea will be has not been announced as yet, but there is a chance that Smith will go ahead with it, now that experiments have proven it to be practical.
