Consider Consider Twelve Twelve as as Derby Derby Starters; Starters; Pot Pot o o Luck Luck Tops Tops Line-Up Line-Up for for Clark Clark Phalanx Sent Mile In Morning Trial Pre-Race Favorite Inclined To Loaf While Being Timed In 1:44% Around Dogs CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky.. April 30.— The seventy-third running of the 00,000 Kentucky Derby here Saturday took on a slightly more open aspect today as several hitherto lightly regarded horses either trained smartly or came out of the Derby Trial yesterday in fine fettle, coupled with a slightly disappointing morning trial by the pre-race favorite, Phalanx. While Phalanx mile drill was not actually poor, it still did not please trainer Sylvester Veitch. It was drizzling when he stepped onto the track, which was fast, early this morning. He was sent once around the oval and out some 15 feet from the rail around the "dogs." He turned the mile in 1:44%, with the first quarter in :25%, the half mile in :50%, and the six furlongs in 1:17%. Phalanx worked handily, but he seemed inclined to loaf a bit. Over at the Calumet barn, trainer Ben Jones was quite happy over the game effort turned in by Faultless in the Trial. The horse came out of the race without mishap or incident. Jones indicated the horse was as fit as possible and would have no excuses in the Derby. Another trainer satisfied with the Derby Trial result was William Booth, who conditions Cosmic Bomb for William Helis. "We have a chance," commented Booth, "and I am satisfied that Cosmic Bomb will benefit greatly from his effort in the Trial." Star Reward, the Dixiana colt, who came from a languid beginning to press Faultless at the wire in the Trial, gained a host of new friends on the showing. Around the backstretch this morning, the talk was more and more of Star Reward being tabbed as the "horse to beat." Fault- Continued on Page Thirty-One Twelve Likely to Journey Postwa rd for Kentucky Derby Continued from Page One less carried 118 pounds in the Trial, some eight more than Star Reward, and on Saturday the Dixiana colt will enjoy no weight concessions. However, his dramatic dash into con-tion from the sluggish start was so impressive as to make many keen observers discount the difference in weights. It goes without saying that the connections of Double Jay were disappointed in his Trial effort. Double Jay set the pace to the head of the stretch, then gave way under the sustained pressure of Faultless and Cosmic Bomb. However, the stable hopes and believes he will turn in a far superior effort on Saturday. Stepfather, the reliance of Harry M. Warner of Los Angeles in the rich classic, was the victim of an old ailment in the Trial, according to trainer Graceton Phil-pot. He left the barn sound, but in the race an old injury asserted itself and he did not rally in his usual fashion. Trainer Philpot hastily called in a veterinarian and the horse was given prompt treatment to correct the condition. The horse was walking soundly this morning and without a bobble. His present condition is such as to greatly encourage his connections. Meanwhile, early Derby arrivals were pouring into Louisville, a condition reflected in the increasing crowds at the track. It was still possible to get hotel roms today providing you checked out by tomorrow. All hotels have been sold out solid from Thursday through until Sunday morning, these reservations having been made months ago. Louisville city officials would not estimate how many would attend the Derby, saying that one guess was as good as another, but some did express themselves as predicting the crowd would run anywhere between 10,000 to 20,000 more than last years estimated 100,000. Special trains were beginning to arrive from all directions* and the airlines have put extra equipment into service. Eastern Airlines, for instances, has announced 10 extra flights into Louisville.
