Brown Mogul Takes Snark at Jamaica While Stymie Runs Unplaced in Sprint Nearway Whips Andys Glory In Youthful Stakes; Guerin Astride Consecutive Triple JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., April 30.— Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Stymie made his 1947 debut at Jamaica today in the Snark Handicap, a race that overshadowed the Youthful Stakes, and it was a meaningless effort, as the route -running champion was all but left at the post, breaking a half-dozen lengths back of the field in an unsuitable six-furlong dash, then closing a little ground to finish fifth in the field of seven. Joe W. Browns Brown Mogul scored by little more than three lengths over Jaclyn Stables Inroc, who dwelt at the start, then was rushed into contention. T. P. Morgans False Move was less than a length farther back and three lengths before William Helis Tidy Bid, who led Stymie a neck at the wire. The race was run in 1:10%, three-fifths slower than the track record, and Brown Mogul paid 4.30. This was one of the milder upsets of a day of surprises. Eric Guerin was astride the son of Brown King. Claud C. Tanners Nearway captured the Youthful Stakes in the final stride, finishing well beyond the middle track a head before Irving Gushens Andys Glory, who led Harvey Cantors Sunsation another head, while A. C. Ernsts Alphara was only a neck out of the money after leading into the stretch. Nearway gave Eric Guerin a double in the two features, as the New Orleans jockey had been astride Brown Mogul in the Snark. A throng of 27,024 passed through the Continued on Page Three Brown Mogul Wins Snark As Stymie Runs Unplaced Nearway Whips Andys Glory in Youthful; Guerin Rides Triple Continued from Page One turnstiles in pleasantly mild weather. The majority were treated to a series of surprises after the first race, which was won by the odds-on choice, Tintalate, no other choices scoring through the feature. Though a stakes winner in the Crescent City, Nearway was comparatively neglected, paying 1.30 after getting the five furlongs in :59%. Eric Guerin made a consecutive triple when he took the sixth race on Dorothy Brown, closing with a rush to beat the pacemaking Kay Gibson. This made it a double for trainer John Theall, who also saddled Brown Mogul, while Tom Heard, Jr., sent out Nearway for the Youthful. Tidy Bid went to the front at the start of the Snark, followed by Scholarship, Brown Mogul, Ima Fastone, Inroc, False Move and Stymie, who just walked out of the gate. Longden quickly rushed Inroc into contention and was third behind Tidy Bid and Scholarship at the far turn, giving the impression that he was about to go to the front, while Brown Mogul was being rated in fourth place. Stymie was still last at this stage, daylight behind the sixth horse, but was closing some ground. Inroc got to the front at the head of the home lane, but was tired from his early exertions and hung badly, offering little resistance as Brown Mogul swept up on the outside to take the lead and drew away. Though tiring badly, Inroc held the belated charge of False Move safe. This edition of the Youthful was one of the roughest in its history as Andys Glory came over on the field nearing the far turn, knocking Roman Road out of contention and forcing Sunsation, Star Bout and Nearway to take back. Rounding into the stretch, Andys Glory took the lead from Alphara, who was racing the rail, and appeared about to draw away, but hung in the final yards. Meanwhile, Nearway had been moving up rapidly on the extreme outside, while Sunsation was running strongly near the rail. As Andys Glory began to sprawl, Nearway charged down the outside, forcing his head to the front a jump from the wire, while Sunsation finished strongly along the inside, taking third honors from Alphara right on the wire.
