Bewitch Romps to Easy Victory in Debutante Calumet Miss Well in Hand Last Sixteenth of Churchill Fixture CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., April 30. — Displaying high speed from the start, Calumet Farms homebred, Bewitch, a quick daughter of Bull Lea and Potheen, romped to an impressive and easy victory here today in the forty-seventh running of the 0,000 Debutante Stakes. Taken in hand by jockey Douglas Dodson during the final sixteenth of the five-furlong filly fixture, Bewitch coasted to the wire eight lengths before her nearest rival, H. P. Headleys Pelt, who was second by a two-length margin over her stablemate, Loriot. Two lengths off the Headley miss, C. Mauberret, Jr.s, Merry Zac was fourth in the field of seven two-year-old fillies meeting in the dash. Bewitch, who began her campaign at the recent Keeneland meeting with two clever triumphs, kept her record clean when she accounted for the Debutante. She sped the distance over the dull footing in 1:0035. Installed a 7 to 10 choice. Bewitch rounded out a double for the Calumet establishment and trainer B. A. Jones, for Always scored earlier in the program. The Downs stake was worth ,700 to owner Warren Wright. Floral Trial began very fast when the Debutante field left the stalls, but Bewitch took command before going three-eighths and she then drew out to win as Dodson pleased. Merry Zac held on quite well until midway of the stretch, but failed to stay in the late stages and the Headley pair, Pelt and Loriot, passed her for second and third honors.
