Turbine Prevails In Drive at Havre Overtakes Blue Yonder in Closing Stages, Then Draws Off to Length Accounting HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 20. Gaining a host of admirers for his engagement in Saturdays 0,000 Havre de Grace Handicap, the good handicap performer Turbine registered a popular victory over five stanch rivals before 9,000 in the featured Alliance Purse here today. Racing for the estate of Mrs. H. Lebowitz, Turbine came from off the pace with a smart rally in the final eighth of a mile to reach the judges a length clear of Mrs. E. H. Augustus Blue Yonder, with H. L. Straus New Moon three lengths farther back in third place. The first three were equally weighted under 124 pounds. Turbine has been a formidable competitor over the Havre de Grace track this spring and the rangy bay son of Burning Star Lucky Jean further indicated his particular fondness for the local course by completing the one mile and a sixteenth of todays feature in a commendable 1:45 over the good track. Odds-On Choice Turbine opened and closed a stanch favorite on the infield board, finally going off at 4 to 5. He paid .60 straight with Mrs. Helen K. Haggertys Rampart, who finished fifth, a slight second choice over New Moon. Capably handled by the veteran Mike Basile, Turbine was rated in a contending position during the early stages, permitting Rampart and the fleet New Moon to wage a shar battle for the early pace. Leaving the backstretch Basile made his move and the willing Turbine, remaining on the outside, quickly responded to urging to be in the thick of contention at the quarter pole. Turbine was kept on the outside for the stretch run and was a length off the pace-making Blue Yonder at the furlong pole. Through the final eighth of a mile, the favorite gradually wore the leader down to register a clear-cut victory. Blue Yonder ran a creditable race, considering it was only his second start of the current campaign. The handsome chestnut colt trailed the field entering the back-stretch, but picked up his rivals one by one under Al Sniders capable handling to wrest the lead on the inside just beyond the quarter stretch, but finally gave ground in the closing drive.
