Suffolk Downs Lists Six Stakes To Be Run During Summer Meet 0,000 Massachusetts, Feature of Session, Will Be Renewed on July 30 SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 20. With the thirteenth running of the famed Massachusetts Handicap leading the way, the Eastern Racing Association will offer six stakes during its forthcoming summer meeting of 30 days, July 7 through August 9, it was announced here today by president Alan J. Wilson. Encouraged by the success of the current session, in spite of wretched weather and muddy racing surfaces, Wilsons schedule calls for an outlay of 20,000 in added monies during the five weeks of sport. Always a magnet for the leading handicap horses in training, the host organization is "crossing its fingers" in hope that Armed, Stymie and others will be at their peak of condition for the Massachusetts. Following is the complete stake schedule: July 12 Betsy Ross Stakes, 0,000, two-year-olds, fillies, five and a half furlongs. July 19 Hannah Dustin Handicap, 5,-000, three-year-olds and upward, fillies and mares, one and one-sixteenth miles. July 26 Miles Standish Stakes, 0,000, two-year-olds, colts and geldings, five and a half furlongs. July 30 Massachusetts Handicap, 0,-000, three-year-olds and upward, one and one-eighth miles. August 2 Bunker Hill Handicap, 0,000, three-year-olds and upward, one mile. August 9 Mayflower Stakes, 5,000, two-year-olds, six furlongs. Standout Horse Always Winner While the Massachusetts, never won by any horse except a standout in the handicap field, including Calumet Farms Whirl-away," greatest money earner in the history of the American turf, tops the imposing list of, stakes, the three events for juveniles the Betsy Ross, the Miles Standish and the Mayflower again will build the meeting up to a grand closing day. Bay Staters take delight in watching the development of two-year-olds and the three Suffolk stakes have been used- as springboards for many outstanding thoroughbreds. Of particular interest to breeders will be the eleventh running of the Hannah Dustin, given over to fillies and mares. The "daddy" of them all, however, is the Massachusetts, rich in racing tradition, thrills and memories in spite of its comparative youth. It had its initial running the first year the track was opened in 1935 and was won by A. A. Baronis Top Row, famous son of Peanuts, with H. P. Head-leys Whopper second and A. G. Vander-bilts mighty Discovery third. Down through the years came such winners as F. A. Carreauds Time Supply, C. S. Howards Seabiscuit, H. P. Headleys Me-now, Belair Studs Fighting Fox, G. D. Wideners Eight Thirty, Glen Riddle Farms War Relic, Calumets Whirlaway, Louis Tufanos Market Wise, Mrs. Eddie Mulrenans First Fiddle, only horse to repeat, turning this feat in 1945, after a score in 1944, and William Jeffords Pavot last summer. Nominations for all stakes will close Monday, June 16.
