Feltner Succeeds McCue As Double Jays Trainer Young Conditioner Will Handle All of Ridgewood Stable String HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 20. Ridgewood Stables Double Jay, voted the outstanding two-year-old colt of the 1946 racing season, but a bitter disappointment during a light campaign this season, will be conditioned by the clever young trainer, Claude Feltner, for his return to competition. This was made public today when James Boines and James Tigani, co-owners of the Ttidgewood establishment, announced that they had accepted the resignation of W. L. "Duke" McCue. In selecting Feltner, Boines and Tigani have secured the services of one of the countrys youngest and most capable thoroughbred conditioners. Feltner, a Berry.-ville, Va., trainer, and son of the veteran Charles M. Feltner, first gained national prominence in 1943 when he finished third among the countrys leading trainers. Just last winter Feltner took over the conditioning of Mrs. George Smiths Art-Dale Stable and since that time had developed the Maryland-bred Gorget into one of the top handicap performers in Maryland. Only last week Gorget raced a mile and 70 1 V - r yards in 1:41 to establish a new Havre de Grace track standard. Double Jay was the topic of much conversation and writing just prior to tne Kentucky Derby, when he was reported not quite up to that important fixture. His race in Kentucky was very disappointing for he beat only one horse. Off that race, and following a conversation with jockey Johnny Gilbert, his owners decided to withdraw him from the Preakness at Pim-lico. He has since been training fairly well at Delaware Park, and will be taken over immediately by Feltner. Others in the string are Romanock, Bardia, Plymouth, Jay Vince and a pair of two-year-olds, a colt and a filly, each by Balladier, sire of Double Jay.
