Polynesian Heads Line-Up for Roseben Nine Oppose Fleet Elmendorf Racer Takes Up 132 While Facing Fighting Frank, True North In Belmont Chute Headliner BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 20. The eighth running of the 5,000 Roseben Handicap, a six-furlong dash on the Widener straightaway, highlights tomorrows program at "Beautiful Belmont." Elmendorf Farms Polynesian, winner of last years edition of the stake and a specialist of the Widener course, on which he has suffered only one defeat, heads the nimble field of 10 with 132 pounds, most of which will be Eddie Arcaro. The speedy son of Unbreakable is opposed by a shifty band, capable of making him run every step of the way. In order of the weights, they are: Mrs. Louis,e Donovans Fighting Frank, 125; Deering Howes True North, 123; Russell A. Firestones Degage, and Joe W. Browns Mogul, 114 each; C. T. Chenerys Hornbeam, 113; Jaclyn Stables Inroc, 112; Howes Cassis, 111; Richard N. Ryans Orsino, 110, and C. V. Whitneys Recce, 107. Six of the Roseben candidates made their last appearance in the Toboggan Handicap slightly more than two weeks ago on opening day here. Buzfuz won that race by little less than a length, with De-gage second, and Polynesian third. Hornbeam finished seventh, Fighting Frank was tenth, followed by True North and Cassis. Shift in Favor of Widener Ace Degage and Polynesian both finished fast, with Degage leading the Widenerite a half length at the wire and being the stronger of the two at the end. Degage carries the same weight tomorrow, while Polynesian drops two pounds, a shift that should bring them very close, indeed. True North, who holds the Widener course record of 1:08 Vs for the distance, led for almost five furlongs, then stopped abruptly. The Howe colorbearer was making his first start of the season and probably needed that race. Fighting Frank, who had beaten Polynesian by a head in the Paumonok on the opening day of the New York season, also had early speed, being second at the half, but tired badly under 129 pounds. He drops tour tomorrow. Of the others, Brown Mogul turned in a good race when finishing second in the Metropolitan mile, beaten only a length by Stymie, and leading Gallorette and Buzfuz at the wire. Inroc was a distant second be-hond Brown Mogul in a swiftly run sprint at Jamaica for his last appearance. Recce has shown literally nothing this year. Hornbeam ran an evenly dull race in the Toboggan but had a world of speed in Florida, while Orsino will be making his first, start of the season and appears somewhat outclassed. None of the Roseben candidates were detected breezing this morning, but the dense fog that hung over the Long Island tracks may have hidden one or two. However, all of the contenders have demonstrated their fitness in recent competition. Polynesian is almost sure to be favorite in the Roseben with a strong play anticipated for True North, Degage, Brown Mogul and Fighting Frank. Job Dean Jessop, who has been on the sidelines with a kidney ailment, is slated to return to the saddle on True North, while Paul Glidewell will be astride Fighting Frank. That group seems to be the contention. The Belmont track is sloppy at this writing but drains rapidly and barring further rains the Widener course will probably be fast tomorrow.
