Eleven Eleven Face Face Mighty Mighty Story Story in in Steger; Steger; Inaugurate Inaugurate 73-Day 73-Day Meeting Meeting at at Detroit Detroit Rental Issue Won t , Hinder Operation Ariel Ace and Diamond Dick 1 Among Limit Field Vying in Boots and Saddle Handicap FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 23. It is a sparkling program that has been arranged by racing secretary Charles P. Henry to usher in the 73-day racing season that gets under way at this Motor . City course tomorrow. Holding top billing . is the 0,000 Boots and Saddle Handicap, 1 a dash of six furlongs that has attracted : stars from the best sprinters quartered on i the grounds in a field of 16 entrants, a . dozen of which will face the starter. Heading the supporting races is the ,000 mile and one-sixteenth Man o War Handicap, : in which 10 hard-hitting campaigners have accepted weights. The program opens with : a six-furlong dash in which novice riders : will compete. Eviction Notice Served FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 23. While the eviction order from the State of Michigan, which owns the Fair Grounds property, has been served on John Gedert, secretary of the Detroit Racing Association, this service will make no change in plans of operating: the 73-day meeting at this point. The notice carries a 30-day period of grace, which will be followed by whatever court action is necessarry, but state officials admitted that there was no chance that rulings would be obtained before the meeting is completed. Top weight of 116 pounds in the Boots and Saddle has been allotted to David Fergusons Ariel Ace, and the impost appears justified on the excellent record of the son of Ariel, whose consistent Churchill Downs campaign terminated in a victory over the Louisville course. Previous to his Kentucky races Ariel Ace had been undefeated in four starts at Oaklawn Park. Lightly weighted, under 106 pounds, U. R. Smiths Annies Reply was a recent winner in a dead heat at Churchill Downs to attest her present fitness and might be Continued on Page Two Detroit Inaugurates Meeting of 73 Days Rental Controversy Wont Hinder Operation of Scheduled Session Continued from Page One prominent at the end of this test. Carl Grahams Marltown gave evidence that he was ready for a peak effort when he was a creditable second recently in Kentucky. Mrs. George Whites Diamond Dick, a stout favorite with local patrons and holder of the mile record of 1:36 for the local turf course, will shoulder 111 pounds in the headliner. The son of Rolls Royce has been postward twice this season, and gave evidence that he was near peak shape when he finished third to dead-heated winners in a sprint race at Churchill Downs. In that venture, he set the pace into the stretch, and was not badly beaten. J. A. Kinard, Jr., will be represented by Bengal Boy and Koviarose if the latter moves into the race. Bengal Boy was a winner recently at Keeneland and should retain that good form to make his presence felt again. L. J. Hollenbach has named Roi Rouge to the Boots and Saddle, and this son of Burgoo King, who displayed a fondness for the Detroit track last year, comes recommended by a smashing victory at Hialeah in which he scored a front-running victory in a seven-furlong race, eased up at the end. Markey and Bohns Green Shed is the lightweight, with C. P. Martins Lasting Peace under 104 pounds each, and others in the field are G. and G. Stables Knights Gift, Detroit Stable, Inc.s Many Lands, S. J. Alexanders pair of Lloyds and Don Chance, Mrs. E. H. Beezleys Favorito, Mrs. E. Ferris Dicks Gal, who will be coupled with Annies Reply, and the C. F. Martin entry of Bring Me Home and Lasting Peace. The Man o War Handicap bristles with potential contention. O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite, who was somewhat of a champion over the Detroit course last year, has been honored with top weight of 116 pounds. In his lone outing this year, the unassuming black son of Ariel was fourth in the Pensive Handicap at Churchill Downs, and that effort should have served as a final conditioner for his Detroit debut. The stiffest sort of competition can be anticipated from Theodore D. Buhls improved Sweep Swinger, who followed up a good third in his initial seasonal appearance by two smashing victories at Churchill Downs. His Man o War impost is 110 pounds, three pounds less than he carried to an impressive four-length triumph in his latest appearance under silks. Milton Shagrins Darby Dimout rates serious consideration in a field of this calibre. In a race on Derby day at Louisville, Darby Dimout missed a head verdict in a mile test under 118 pounds, and led in Sweep Swinger in that effort. Previously, he had been third in the Hallenden Handicap at Gulfstream. Markey and Bohn will have strong representation in the secondary feature with Bill Ross and Hi Neighbor, and either of these could make his presence felt "by a peak effort. Others in the field include several that are well known at the local course.
