Havre Handicap to Bring Out Turbine Has Brown Mogul, Pellicle as Rivals Flash Burn, Statesman and Blue Yonder in Addition to Six Others Also to Compete HAVRE DE GRACE, Md.f May 23. Handicap horses receive their final opportunity of the Maryland spring season tomorrow when the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association features its final Saturday program with the 0,000 added Havre de Grace Handicap, a mile and one furlong event for three-year-olds and upward. With Greentree Stables Coincidence and Calumet Farms Pep Well declining their 126-pound weight assignments, the starting highweight under 123 pounds in the nine-furlong attraction will be Turbine, who races for the estate of Mrs. H. Lebowitz. This fellow, who seems destined to become the greatest money-winning Maryland-bred since Challedon, will be opposed by the following: Walter M. Jeffords Trymenow, 118; Kenneth A. OConnors Statesman, 117; King Ranchs Flash Burn, 116; Hal Price Headleys Pellicle, 114; Christiana Stables Alexis, 114; Joe W. Browns Brown Mogul, 113; Mrs. E. H. Augustus Blue Yonder, 113; Gustave Rings Prefect, 110; J. H. Hammonds Butler, 109; Mrs. A. Roberts War Watch, 109; Christiana Stables Service Pilot, 108, and Mrs. M. Fishers Shiva-ree, 107. Alexis and Service Pilot race as an entry. Turbine, a son of Burning Star and Lucky Jean, and winner of last years Trenton Handicap, comes up to the race in excellent condition. Winner of three of his seven starts this season, Turbine is especially at home over the local racing strip. After winning an overnight race here during the first meeting, Turbine went to Pimlico and turned in a miserable effort while finishing far back as favorite in the Gittings Handicap. Following a brief respite, the Watts-trained horse again was successful over this track in an overnight affair, attesting his return to peak form. With Mike Basile again in the saddle, Turbine likely will carry the hopes of the form followers. Invaders From New York Certain to make their presence felt in tomorrows headliner are Brown Mogul and Pellicle, who journeyed here from New York especially for the occasion. Brown Mogul appears the most likely of the two, having turned in a creditable effort while finishing third behind Inroc in the recent Roseben Handicap. Prior to that race, Brown Mogul was second to Mrs. E. D. Jacobs Stymie in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which the winner was clocked in 1:37. Pellicle was also a starter in that event, closing resolutely while finishing sixth, beaten less than five lengths. Flash Burn and Statesman, first and second, respectively, in the Gittings Handicap, separated only by a photo finish camera, are certain to come in for a fair share of support in tomorrows fixture. Since the Gittings, the pair finished fifth and sixth behind Assault in the rich Dixie at the Maryland Jockey Club course. Once again it was Flash Burn getting the nod, this time by two and one-half lengths. A possible surprise package in the Havre de Grace field is Mrs. Augustus Blue Yonder, who was a better-than-average performer as a three-year-old last year. Trainer Jim Radney was forced to let up on this colt after he was injured slightly in the running of the 1946 Jersey Handicap at Garden State, but has brought him along steadily. After a rather disappointing spring effort in his seasonal debut, Blue Yonder came back to turn in an exceedingly good race while placing second to Turbine in an overnight affair. That race may have been the conditioner needed to put him in prime condition for tomorrows event. Of the others, Trymenow seems to rate the most consideration. This Menow five-3Tear-old has been a distinct disappointment thus far in his campaign, but a recent nine-furlong training move indicated he is due for an improved effort. Alexis, War Watch, Prefect, Service Pilot, Butler and Shivaree, while they appear a bit overmatched, could upset the calculations.
