Marsch Speedster Topweight at 123 Jack S. L. and Dark Jungle Expected to Provide Most Contention in Lincoln Race HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 23. The 0,000 Steger Handicap, which will have its 1947 renewal at thft historic West Side course tomorrow, attracted a field of 12 high-class thoroughbreds, and it will feature an excellent half-holiday program. The Steger, always one of the real highlights at Lincoln Fields, is to be contested at six and one-half furlongs, and John Marschs Mighty Story, a four-year-old gelded son of Mahmoud and Little Lie, is the topweight for the sixteenth running of the stake under a burden of 123 pounds. Mighty Story, who won his only outing this year at Churchill Downs, appears to be in good shape for his Illinois seasonal debut, and he is remembered by local turf followers for several outstanding performances last year on Chicago tracks. The Marsch star won the Francis S. Peabody Memorial, finished third in the Arlington Classic, and then accounted for the Mead-owland Handicap at Washington Park. Shipped East after those conquests, Mighty Story went on to win the Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct, defeating a crack field in that event. Jockey Anthony Skoronski, one of the better veteran reinsmen, will pilot Mighty Story in the Steger. Crete Handicap Winner Mrs. John S. Letelliers Jack S. L., victor in the Crete Handicap, opening-day headliner of the current meeting and also the winner of the seventy-third running of the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, may offer Mighty Story stiff contention. Jack S. L., who raced and won against top-class company during the New Orleans Fair Grounds winter session, retained top form this spring and he is rated dangerous in the Steger, despite his 122-pound impost. Jess Higley has been assigned to pilot the Letellier gelding in the week-end headliner. Lucas B. Combs is to be represented in the Lincoln Fields stake by Dark Jungle, a four-year-old son of Hedid and Dark River. Bred at the Combs Nursery, Dark Jungle reached his peak this spring under the careful supervision of John M. Goode and he will go postward tomorrow under 119 pounds. Dark Jungles best performance thus far this year was in the 0,000 Churchill Downs-Handicap. Decided during Derby week at the Falls City oval, Dark Jungle stepped the seven furlongs in 1:25 and whipped Jack S. L. by three-quarters of a length. Other fleet thoroughbreds finishing in the Combs colts wake in that stake were Eternal Reward, 1946 winner of the American Derby; George Gains, Phoenix Handicap victor; Bull Play, Merrymarch and Bymeabond, among others. Completing the field for the Steger are: Walter W. Jones Bull Play, 110 pounds; Victor J. Sovinskis Albulil, 110; R. W. Mc-Ilvains Old Kentuck, 109; Mrs. Hyman Friedbergs Harriet Sue, 107; Mrs. Emil Denemarks Chesty, 109, and Fire Dust, 103; Shady Brook Farms Merrymarch, 108; Joenace Stables Juke Box, 117, and Bank Balance, from the Virden and Scott Stable, assigned 108 pounds. Of this latter group, Merrymarch is a winner at the local meeting; Bull Play defeated Jack S. L., Ariel Ace and Many Lands, among others, in the Stoney Point Purse at Keeneland; Juke Box turned in several sharp scores at Sportsmans Park, while Harriet Sue and Old Kentucky are scheduled to make their first 1947 appearance in the Steger. No claiming races are listed on the weekend card and two of the better-supporting attractions are the Flattery Purse, a mile and a sixteenth test for four-year-olds and upward, and the Pittsburgher Purse, a six and one-half furlongs sprint for horses from similar age divisions. The Woolford Farm entry of Leavenworth and Sublime may be favored for the Flattery, while the same establishments Legislator, along with Faithful More and Shaws Pride, are expected to go well in the Pittsburgher. The Mountain Ridge is for four-year-olds and upward, to meet at six and one-half furlongs; two-year-olds will clash in the five-furlong Helens Babe Purse; the Cudgeller matches four-year-olds and upward at six and one-half furlongs, while the Sanskari is for juveniles to contest at five furlongs.
