, 1 . Phalanx Among Sophomore Field Clashing in Peter Pan Handicap . . 1 : i . : : : Whitney Colt Must Concedei Riskolater, Brabancon and Hyblaze Weight at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 23. The eighth running of the 5,000 Peter Pan Handicap, interim prep stake between the Preakness and the 00,000 Belmont Stakes, heads an attractive program at Belmont Park tomorrow. C. V. Whitneys Phalanx, winner of the faster division of this years Wood Memorial and second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Preakness, heads the field with 126 pounds and will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro. The son of Pilate Jacola must concede from six to 21 pounds to his rivals tomorrow, but will probably rule the public choice for this mile and a furlong run. In order of the weights, Phalanx will be opposed by Circle M Ranchs Riskolater, 120; Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon, 117; E. P. Taylors Cornish Knight, 115; Whitneys Bastogne, a stablemate of Phalanx, 113; Belair Studs Hyblaze, 112; Mrs. Robert L. Gerrys Young Peter, 110; Greentree Stables Tailspin, Earl Sandes Stage Kid, and Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Vacance, 109 each; Isidore Biebers Our Tommy, 106, and King Ranchs Contest, 105. Faces Stern Task Today Phalanx, who resembles his Selima-win-ning dam, Jacola, much more than he does his sire, will have his work cut out for him tomorrow. In the Preakness, Phalanx came into serious contention at the end of a mile, but failed to gain ground through the stretch, finishing almost four lengths back of Faultless and more than two lengths behind On Trust. He had Riskolater, Cornish Continued on Page Three r Phalanx to Seek Peter Pan Today Whitney Colt Must Concede Riskolater, Brabancon and Hyblaze Weight at Belmont Continued from Page One Knight and Contest far behind him at the finish, but at level weights. Brabancon finished much closer to Faultless in the Withers Mile the following week-end but that was largely due to the fact that Doug Dodson took a firm hold on the Calumet star in the final eighth. Also discrediting that Withers effort is the fact that the last half mile was run in :53, fairly disgraceful time under any circumstances. Brabancon has yet to win a race this year, though placing second to Faultless in both the Flamingo and the Withers, and being in the money in most of his starts. The dark horse of the Peter Pan is unquestionably Young Peter. -This son of Peanuts has won his last three starts with comparative ease and races with equal facility on fast or muddy tracks. In his last effort, he only beat Mangohick by a neck, but had plenty in reserve and the runner-up came back to win his next start. Our Tommy was third in that mile race. Hyblaze and Stage Kid finished second and third, respectively, behind Secnav, in a mile and a sixteenth test here earlier in the week. Eric Guerin, who rode Hyblaze in that race, said that he only lost by a head because he swerved under the whip. Stage Kid finished eight lengths farther back, without ever threatening. Hyblaze is to be ridden by Abelardo DeLara tomorrow, and Eric Guerin in next weeks Belmont Stakes. Vacance closed some ground in the Chesapeake Stakes in his last appearance and finished second to the moderate Grey Warrior in his previous start in Maryland, but appears outclassed here. Our Tommy Shows Improvement Of the others, Contest is a big, clumsy horse who has his light weight in his favor, plus the fact that he is gradually learning his trade and can be expected to improve. Tailspin finished fairly well to be third to Red Devil and his stablemate, Wide Wing, in an overnight race here; Our Tommy showed improvement when closing with a rush on the outside to be second to the modest Flashco in his last appearance, while Bastogne beat I Will in the sprint division of the Experimental, then turned in two poor efforts. Phalanx, of course, is the box office magnet in the Peter Pan, a race that in its brief history has been won by such good horses as Slide Rule and Lucky Draw. Incidentally, Bounding Home, who finished second to Lucky Draw, went on to beat the Derby and Preakness winner, Pensive, in the Belmont Stakes. The race has been boosted ,000 in value this year.
