THE DIVER broke alertly, was carried to the outside in the early stages, but responded readily to extreme pressure to wear down DETECTIVE in the closing strides. The latter had good speed from the beginning, was bearing out much of the way and just failed to last. SHOCK had no apparent mishap in an even effort. LIGHTS UP was never a factor. MIGHTY MASTER, taken under stout restraint soon after the break, was steadied along to the turn where he improved his position steadily, was eased to the outside when roused for the drive and, after wearing down WASSERMATTER gradually, drew clear while being ridden out. EXCITEMENT, also hard held in the early stages, rallied from the outside on the stretch turn and, after making a brief bid in the early stretch, flattened out in the final drive. ROMAN RUNNER, outrun to the final quarter, responded to urging to move up boldly on the inside nearing the last eighth but had nothing left when the real test came.
