Fields for Detroit Stakes Shaping Up Blue Helen Invading Sector For Maple Leaf; See Spirited Contest in Grosse Pointe FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 30. Two outstanding stake attractions are scheduled for presentation here this week, chief of which is the 5,000 Maple Leaf Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, three years old and older, that is to be decided next Saturday. On Wednesdays mid-week program, the ,500 Grosse Point Handicap, also at six furlongs and for thoroughbreds of both sexes, three years old and older, is to serve asthe feature offering. Racing secretary Charles McLennan recently announced that 13 fillies and mares have been nominated for the Maple Leaf and the probable starting band undoubtedly will bring out several star .performers. Dr. Eslie Asburys homebred, Brownian, has been named for the Maple Leaf along with such clever racers as Mrs. E. E. Dale Shaffers Miss Mommy, J. A. Kroecks Blue Helen, Havahome Stables Sweet Dream, Hal Price Headleys Lithe and Brownell Combs Sequence. Blue Helen, one of the better three-year-olds during the 1948 campaign, is to make her Detroit debut in the Maple Leaf, according to word received from her trainer, Walter Ridenour. Blue Helen engaged top company throughout her colorful career and finished second to Woolford Farms Delegate Saturday in the Steger at Washington Park. Ridden by Willie Garner in the Chicago stake, Blue Helen was beaten but twe lengths at the end of the six and one-hall furlongs and such shifty thoroughbreds af Enforcer, With Pleasure, Tidy Sum anc Anns Lee were in the field that finished back of her in the Steger. Anns Lee is to represent Mrs. A. M. Dursch next week-end in the Maple Leaf. Ran Second to Shy Guy Miss Mommy gave a good account of herself in the Border City Handicap, finishing second, a length off Dixianas Shy Guy. Lithe, from the highly successful Head-ley establishment, has been nominated for the Maple Leaf and she should go I i.her well in the sprint. Lithe ran third t hind The Fat Lady and Stole in the Roys Oai Stakes after she had encountered ereid-erable interference and should she t an even break in the racing luck, must be aci-corded a good chance to achieve major honors in the Saturday feature. While the aforementioned fillies and. mares seem to have an edge in the Maple Leaf, several other eligibles for the stakp : have shown occasional flashes of hig i speed, and they are considered dangeroufs contenders. Among those expected to contest the week-end headliner are Mrs. JeajJi Cambrons Challorette, A. R. Evans Evarj" step, Carr Hatchs Mazarine, Jerry McCarthy Stables Cherish, O. F. Woodwardrs Hilda, and Our Request, who races for tne partnership of Mrs. George C. Wi. tie anld E. W. Thomas. The Grosse Point should provide ei "e"--lent sport, although only seven horses hz e been assigned weights for the Wednedy dash. Joseph A. Goodwins Papa RedbUd drew the top burden of 128 pounds, I Dixianas Star Reward is next with an impost of 122 pounds. Papa Redbird anjcl Star Reward met here on opening d. y ip. the Curtain Up Handicap and the form r drove to a narrow decision over Portei s Broom, while the Dixiana representative was a close-up third. Should Papa Redbird and Star Reward clash in the midweek feature, the Groo Point probably will develop into one of the best contested sprint offerings of the season. Peter A. Markeys Piet, who raceand second to Royal Governor in the Wilmington Handicap at Delaware Park last Saturday, drew 120 pounds for the local stak;e and may be returned here to fill his engagement. Hal Price Headleys Plumper, 114 pounds; Bernard J. Bax King Bay, 104; John Kinards Eternal Bomb, 103, and Theodore D. Buhls Crack Reward, assigned 101 pounds, round out the possible starting band for the Grosse Point. Tomorrows card at the Fair Grounds is an unusually well-balanced one, and the Mackinac Purse, at six furlongs for four-year-olds and older, is the top attraction. P. L. Grissoms Almenow, who defeated Headley Stables Catsmeow last week 5 ti the Hamtramck Purse, is to hook up wijth his rival again tomorrow, and the weights under the allowance conditions are sufch that the pair may stage a rather stirrt ig duel for major honors. Other highly le-i garded Mackinac entrants are Challoretjtej Blue Badge, Cotton Joe, Imperator, tfreJ consistent Dicks Gal and Castel Bedu among others. -
